I adore Angel in his own series. He actually grows a character of his own, and he's funny.

I don't much care for him in BTVS, because he's really one-note by comparison, a dreamy guy for Buffy to moon over - and yes, that romantic arc not surprisingly does seem very high-schoolish, which is appropriate for her, but not so much for him. IMO.

SA. Oops, I realize I just did the thing you said in your secret, where I said he was better in his own show. He is. But I do think there's plenty of room for criticism for him in BTVS. I think that you're probably just running afoul of the shipping police if you're got pushback on those complaints.

I loved it when I first watched, but after seeing AtS, I could only see Buffy and Angel as a slightly better Bella and Edward.

Except Buffy's a way stronger character than Bella. But still.

Different anon. I never liked Buffy and Angel together, it was not something I dared say out loud in fandom but I felt like they brought out the worst in each other and I was so relieved when he got his own series. Not even because I loved his series (because I didn't know I would at the time) but because it was really nice to see the doomed romance pretty much come to an end (especially since most other tv shows tend to keep those types of romances driving you insane for the whole series.)

I'm with you, except I felt it didn't conclusively end. I think that BTVS always kept teasing that maybe MAYBE they'd get back together because soulmates, or something.

I actually like the idea that while they may be attracted to each other, they are not actually a good fit and don't work. I don't think BTVS did that out of actual writing choice, but because Angel and BTVS ended up being on different networks.

And (going slightly OT now) I hate with a fiery passion the "omg, I love you so much but we can't be together." It crops up in some many shows, probably as a way of building angst and romantic tension, but it drives me batty. I always scream at the TV, "if you can't be together, then DON'T."

So yeah, I hear ya!

Well yeah I too felt like in a way Buffy/Angel was supposed to be endgame or like, Buffy was never supposed to love anyone as much as she loved Angel, but I'm glad both series kind of ended on their own without getting back into that (I know the comics revisited it a bit but I have no idea what is going on in the comics now and don't really want to.)

But even without the conclusive end, Angel having his own show just felt like it saved Buffy from turning into a complete romance cliche (not that Buffy would have to go in that direction, but even good writers can't always resist it.) It was really refreshing and nice to see them as individual characters.

"omg, I love you so much but we can't be together." It crops up in some many shows, probably as a way of building angst and romantic tension, but it drives me batty. I always scream at the TV, "if you can't be together, then DON'T."

ME TOO. Especially because writers tend to come up with all sorts of ridiculous ways for the couple to not be together, and the longer it goes on the more incompatible the pair ends up being. I never find it romantic and by the time those sorts finally get together (if they do) I'm pretty much bored of the characters along with their "romance."

I think they brought out the best in each other (and yeah, they were willing to sacrifice each other for the world which sucks, but is also the right thing to do).

... and I've always wondered if the arc in the Buffy GN was a not-so-sly reference to that very point.

I haven't read any of the comics, but that sounds like it could be interesting. Details?

Depends on how much spoilage you want, but -- from the wikipedia summary:

"The appearances of these villains are connected to "Twilight", the enigmatic Big Bad of the season, a masked person who views the expanded ranks of Slayers as a threat to humanity and wants to destroy them, and bring about an end to all magic on Earth."

(Anonymous) 2014-12-23 05:54 am (UTC)(link)
Oh yeah, I did hear about the Twilight big bad, but I didn't have a lot of faith that they'd actually follow through. But until this moment, I didn't make the connection - vampire "Twilight". Hahahahahah! That is awesome.

Huh, I just read a brief synopsis on Wikipedia. Interesting-ish. And yet, still so much Buffy relationship drama. Xander? Seriously? And Angel and Spike. If only they could have worked Riley and Parker in there too, it might have been a full reunion.

Don't get too excited. Joss claims he thought of the name Twilight before the Twilight craze.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-23 06:30 am (UTC)(link)
AYRT, that makes it even funnier: Joss got Jossed by Stephenie Meyers! So embarrassing.

yeah, but the show was like that too, in some aspects? (Though the Dawn stuff was ... just too weird.)

I don't know if the use of the code name Twilight was deliberate or accidental, but either way it seems apropos.

He was funny! I loved his bad dancing at Cordelia's party and how protective he got of is leather coat.

Dork!Angel is the best. I also love all his karaoke moments.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-23 07:57 pm (UTC)(link)
So true. He is way more endearing as a dork than as a passionate dark hero or whatever.
