Who's the accurate one here, age-wise? BBC Merlin or the animation?

(Anonymous) 2014-12-24 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
Not the BBC.

Since Merlin traditionally ages backwards...

I did not know that. But doesn't that mean they'd meet in the middle, about in their late 30s?

It's always been my understanding their ages don't ever match up, and then Nimue locks him up in the tree when it's possible they might've matched up.

I have never known this

In all my life, I have never heard this

That is...weird. What about when he was born? That must have been hella painful for his mom.

I cannot answer that. I want to say his mother was part fey? The Lady of the Lake? I've read waaaay many Arthur stories, and after a while, they get muddled up in my head.

This is true for the T.H. White Merlin in The Once and Future King upon which the movie is based, but it's not necessarily part of the Merlin mythology as a whole. That's probably the reason why you haven't heard of it. In British myth, he's the offspring of a mortal woman and an incubus.

Depends on the version of the myth, but in the Monmouth version at least Merlin was involved in Arthur's birth (disguised Uther as Igraine's husband so he could sleep with her by deceit, begetting Arthur), so I think the point here goes to Disney.

This is also how Morgan Le Fay is Arthur's half-sister. She was the daughter of Igraine and her first husband, who died in battle the same night Uther was sleeping with his wife.

Thanks, Merlin.

This was one of the big stinks when BBC Merlin first aired, that both Arthur and Merlin were the same age, and usually Merlin is shown much older.

I'm surprised this needs to be a secret. It was widely discussed in the media at the time, about how much the "reimagining" had changed, and everyone giving their opinions on it.
