Best of both worlds tbh. Hey if I wanted Hemingway I'd pick up a real book.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-27 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
Hemmingway

It's spelled with two m's

(Anonymous) 2014-12-27 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
nayrt - Uh, not if it's the writer Ernest Hemingway anon is referring to. Only one "m".

Might want to doublecheck on your information before correcting other people.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-27 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
Eh he he, nooo. I believe they're referring to the classic novelist Ernesto Hummingbird. You've...probably never heard of him...

I'm the opposite - I LOVE that kind, because the smut gets me through the plot more easily.

Depends on whether the plot's interesting or not.

(i.e., Thinnish plot mainly there to facilitate the romance = Yay, sex scenes!

Interesting plot that has meaning and purpose and characterization on its own = Argh, not another sex scene!)

Most of the time, that is. I've read a handful of exceptions.

It's the perfect icon for far too many of my comments, actually. I know that I'm being too bitchy when I realize "you know, I've been using that Buffy icon a lot this week..." ;) Then I try to switch my commenting tone to make this Harley Quinn icon appropriate instead.

I like it, but then I have a filthy mind, so...

Not that a fic needs constant smut, and I can see how if it wasn't well written it would be a bother, but as long as the inclusion feels natural then I'm good with it.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-27 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
Eh. I love it as long as it's characters I want to read smut about - in those cases I can't get enough of it.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-27 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
This is actually my favourite formula for fic-- plot is fine but mostly I read for smut. Give me the promise of well-written sexy stuff and I will follow your plot anywhere

(Anonymous) 2014-12-27 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
I dislike it, too, but I think my reasons might be different. When I'm looking for smut, I'm looking for straight-up smut, and plot gets in the way of that. With these kind of stories, I'm just going through each chapter and skimming to get to the good bits.

I don't think I mind, if I'm enjoying a fic I don't care how much/little sex their is.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-27 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
I completely agree. I love smut as much as anyone else, but in a longer, plotty fic, it just gets really repetitive and boring.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-27 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's what I was thinking. Any kind of erotic fiction without any sexual tension gets boring fast. If there's sex every chapter you can't build up the tension, so you have to rely on narrative tension... and most of these kinds of stories don't have all that great a plot.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-27 09:31 am (UTC)(link)
I only find it annoying in longer fics. It kills the sexual tension if the scenes are too regular, and I start to get the feeling the author has some kind of sex scene quota.

Up to about 5 chapters I'm fine with lots of constant sex. In fact I like it.

It's when a fic is really plotty and has a lot of really violent and tense action going on. It's hard to believe any characters can maintain their constant permaboners under such stress. In the short term, I imagine it works through adrenaline. Over a period of months, unless there's some sort of extenuating circumstances, it's much less believable.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-27 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
I am amused by how bored the male rabbit looks. "Ugh. This again."

(Anonymous) 2014-12-27 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
Depends on the plot and how it's handled, for me. I mean, I mostly skim sex scenes anyway, because I'm here for the feelings not the body parts, but it only actively bothers me if the constant sex is taking away from what could have been a genuine plot. An excuse plot that's mostly built around the sex, I don't care, but if this plot is supposed to be involving derring-do and world saving and the risk of horrible things happening if things go wrong, then I'd like the characters to have something of a sense of priority. I call it the Flash Gordon rule. "Flash, I love you, but we only have fourteen hours to save the Earth!" Bone after the world is saved, not in every convenient closet on the way to world saving when honestly you haven't got the time.

Mostly I want to tell authors to pick an approach. Have a romance plot that facilitates all the sex, or have an action plot and skip most of the sex, but for the love of god stop trying to have both. When I'm reading for the world saving and the danger and the romance in fraught moments, it's really, really tedious to have to stop every other chapter for some more 'Slot A, Tab B' at moments when the characters really should have other things to worry about.

[personal profile] nyxelestia 2014-12-27 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
I've only seen a handful of times where excessive smut in what is otherwise plot fic worked out well - and these were all situations where the sex scenes were often drastically different from each other, and each other had unique emotional developments to them.

But yeah, most of the time, the sex scenes are all similar enough to blur into each other, so even though there is emotional development, they still end up quite boring and I end up skimming the scenes. (That, or there just is not emotional development).

"Porn with plot" can also be a mixed bag, but ultimately, I like to either enjoy the plot or enjoy the smut, not both at the same time.

My biggest complaint is that even when the characters feel very different in other scenes, they tend to act identical when the fucking starts. Whether A is doing X to B or B is doing X to A, they'll do it in exactly the same way and with exactly the same description. It's like the old complaint about JRPGs, with everyone losing their personalities once combat starts, only fanfic characters become bland fucking machines instead of bland killing machines.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-27 09:40 am (UTC)(link)
I skim ahead to the sex scenes when I first try out a new fic writer, for very this reason.

A writer who lets everyone go out of character during sex scenes, or falls back on "stick tab A in slot B", or uses porn/romance stock phrases when those particular characters would never talk like that (eg "debauched" "cum" "ravish" etc) is just not a good writer. I'd rather find that out sooner than later.

Only if a writer can handle sex scenes do I go on and read their fics. It's a tough test. Many published writers fail at this hurdle.

If a writer doesn't have any sex scenes to test out this way, not even one or two, I'm sorry to say that I tend to ignore all their fics completely. Sex scenes are hard. In my opinion, they're the best test of writing skill.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-27 12:58 pm (UTC)(link)
That's...the most ridiculous test I've ever heard. A lot of people just plain aren't interested in writing sex scenes, and you won't even give them a chance because of it? You'll cut out what's probably most of the published fiction in the world just because it doesn't have a sex scene for you to judge in it?
