I bet you are a gamer girl who is different from those OTHER girls.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-27 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
Or she is just like all those OTHER girls who are tired of male gamer bullshit.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-27 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
Male gamers are not a monolith, though. It would make sense to be suspicious or wary of male gamers, but avoid at all costs? Ehh...

(Anonymous) 2014-12-27 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
Nayrt

To me, a lot of my reaction has to do with the fact that there is a difference (in my mind at least) between playing games, and calling yourself a gamer. I have no problem with the first group but the second group can be fairly annoying and includes a lot of questionable people

(Anonymous) 2014-12-27 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
^^^this.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-27 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
What is this "male gamer bullshit"? Legit question, because I'm a girl who games (I play everything from shooters to MMOs to action games to Pokemon) and the amount of asshole guys I've encountered is a tiny minority compared to the nice people.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-27 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
Must be the vocal minority giving a bad name to the majority again.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-27 05:13 am (UTC)(link)
Even in circles where the assholes are the minority, they can be toxic enough that avoiding the entire group is less frustrating than playing chucklefuck roulette.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-27 05:42 pm (UTC)(link)
That's how i have come to feel about feminism. I always feel good when i see somone validating this mindset.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-29 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
And we have a Mussing the Point supreme champion. Feminism is real and necessary, games are not.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-27 06:39 am (UTC)(link)
You're lucky. I run into two types of guys, generally: 1.) the ones that shout me out of the game for being a tryhard or a fake, 2.) the ones that awkwardly flirt and want to gift me games and get pissed off when I politely decline.

There are 3.) normal guys that just want to play games and don't give a shit about me being a girl, either hatefully or acting like I'm special, but they are unfortunately the tiny tiny minority within the games I play.

I usually get the advice of "well just don't go on mic!" but fuck that! Why should I have to make shit harder for myself (and by extension my team if I'm in team games) just to prevent a bunch of assholes from ~finding out~ that I'm a girl? Who fucking cares?

(Anonymous) 2014-12-27 10:33 am (UTC)(link)
gamers like to bitching too much. Just for the sake winning and such.

Assholes...

(Anonymous) 2014-12-27 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
Don't be silly. I'm not the OP, I'm not a gamer at all, and I am absolutely like many other "girls" with geeky interests, but I've heard enough about GamerGate that I'd be very wary, too. Anyone sensible would be, IMO.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-27 06:42 am (UTC)(link)
Yep. I have male friends who are gamers (although really only one who wears the "gamer" title), and even while knowing positive representatives, it's very very hard not to be put off by any stranger identifying as a male gamer because of recent events.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-27 06:55 am (UTC)(link)
lol

most people who play video games don't care about gamergate

also you're making "male gamers" sound like some of sort alien cult, not just some dudes who play video games

(Anonymous) 2014-12-27 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, I am aware. I didn't say I was necessarily being rational about it.

But the dudes behind Gamergate? They exist in real life. They're *somebody*, maybe even somebody you know.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-29 10:43 am (UTC)(link)
YUP.

Who wants to to deal with that?

(Anonymous) 2014-12-27 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
This doesn't even make sense by the standards of the stereotype you're invoking. A girl who's different than all the other girls would be boasting about how comfortable she is with gamer guys. Doesn't even make sense.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-27 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly.
