Same, though to be honest, gamers of all kinds are starting to get on my nerves. Nothing against video games or people who play them, but I don't want anything to do with "gamers."

I think gamer culture, even totally setting aside gamer gate, is kind of absurd and pointless and petty and toxic. But that's not really an indictment of individual people who identify as gamers. They can be perfectly nice even if the culture is a bit silly.

And this is just video games ofc, people who play traditional games are obviously super cool and sexy

I think this is the silliest thing to come out of 2014, to be honest. "Oh no. A guy called himself a gamer. He must be a misogynistic gamer gate person!"

In reality, Gamergate wasn't as big or popular as most people seem to think it was. And most people who call themselves "gamers" are just saying "I enjoy playing video games."

tbh anyone who makes a big deal about their hobbies, especially nerdy ones, i tend to avoid b/c they tend to substitute that for their personality

I'm male and play video games. I don't identify as a gamer. It's a stupid fucking label and I don't like most dudes who identify as gamers for pretty much a lot of the reasons I'm assuming you have for avoiding them.

"Gamer" is such a vague label that all of this is kind of stupid and not worth wanking about.

If someone came up to me and asked if I was a gamer, I'd say yes, because I play video games. If someone asked if "gamer" was the top priority label I'd choose for myself, I'd say no. There are plenty of people like me out there who only know that such a thing called GamerGate exists and happened and have no idea what it's about and frankly don't care, because I'm a gamer because I play video games and that's it.

If OP wants to avoid all men who play video games and may have called themselves a gamer at some point, then let OP go ahead and avoid tons of normal people. Who gives a shit.

Ok, to be perfectly honest, I'm a male, I identify as a gamer.

I feel very hurt by most of this thread. I do kinda feel under attack.

I also kinda feel like I deserve to be, so I don't know why I'm posting.

It came up as a result of a protracted harassment campaign started by an ex.

He wrote a very long blog piece outlining how he felt she hurt him. I don't care to comment further because other people's private lives aren't my business. He did not feel this way, and shopped the piece around to various nerd centric forums in an attempt to create a grass roots movement to defame her (I believe hoods words were something like "to warn the industry and individuals about her")

He was rejected at almost every forum he posted on due to the ugly, hurtful intent of the post. He was not rejected by /v/

Channers took the defamation idea and ratcheted it up to harassment. In their irc channel, logs show them discussing ways to reframe the harassment to appeal to a broader audience. Since "they had a bad relationship" isn't a relatable reason to harass women, it was suggested it be reframed as an issue of ethics in video game journalism since they could make a connection between ZQ and a journalist. (A positive review never came of this, however.)

The original post didn't claim nepotism, but seizing on this would lead to the notorious IA video which furthered the claim. Adam Baldwin tweeted the video with the GamerGate hashtag, and that's how GamerGate began.

It came from people wanting it to be there. Seriously.

tl;dr same. There's a bit of a difference I find between someone who goes "i play games" and "I'm a gamer". hmmm.
