Re: It's becuase people find lesbians less threatening than male gays.

I can see where you're coming from, and I've definitely seen both types of 'threat'. It's just that overall, people are less threatened by women, and because lesbianism is often portrayed as just being something for the male gaze, rather than a genuine relationship (even if/when it is), it's less of a threat to the men themselves. I suspect it's that whole "men are afraid of gays because they fear being treated by gays the way they treat women" mentality.

Women being in love with each other is okay, but not men loving each other, because that's more likely to threaten a straight man's perception of his own masculinity or manhood. Hell, this is even codified in some countries that still treat male homosexuality as a criminal offense, but not female homosexuality.

Aren't a lot of lesbians in these regressive countries subject to "corrective rape" though?

Yes, they are, because they can still be 'saved' - unlike gay men who are more likely to just be killed for their homosexuality in these countries. The women's homosexuality can be used to reaffirm so-called-masculinity (via raping them), but there's no way to 'correct' male homosexuality without the men doing the 'correcting' being potentially labeled as gay, themselves - so better to just 'eliminate the problem' altogether, because it's safer that way.
