Re: It's becuase people find lesbians less threatening than male gays.

I actually don't think that's true at all. Most of the representation we've seen in media is gay men, not lesbian or bisexual-in-f/f relationships women. Femmeslash is looked down upon and considered gross in a way that slash isn't, and when compared to slash and het, it's the clear and obvious minority. Women who fool around with women are presented with the male gaze in mind, as doing so only for attention, or as just needing or being open to correction by a male partner.

Gay men are less threatening than lesbians, because their relationships still involved men. Lesbian and bisexual f/f relationships don't involve men at all, and that's fucking horrifying to a society that's built around male = default.

I actually have to agree with nyxelestia on her point. I feel like there's a fear that if the main male characters are outed as gay, it'll chase off the male fans of the show who are afraid of being seen as gay. (Star Trek is a perfect example of this. They had two "gay" f/f couples, but I doubt the franchise would have ever attempted making any of its male characters engage in a homosexual relationship.)

I can see where you're coming from, and I've definitely seen both types of 'threat'. It's just that overall, people are less threatened by women, and because lesbianism is often portrayed as just being something for the male gaze, rather than a genuine relationship (even if/when it is), it's less of a threat to the men themselves. I suspect it's that whole "men are afraid of gays because they fear being treated by gays the way they treat women" mentality.

Women being in love with each other is okay, but not men loving each other, because that's more likely to threaten a straight man's perception of his own masculinity or manhood. Hell, this is even codified in some countries that still treat male homosexuality as a criminal offense, but not female homosexuality.

Aren't a lot of lesbians in these regressive countries subject to "corrective rape" though?

Yes, they are, because they can still be 'saved' - unlike gay men who are more likely to just be killed for their homosexuality in these countries. The women's homosexuality can be used to reaffirm so-called-masculinity (via raping them), but there's no way to 'correct' male homosexuality without the men doing the 'correcting' being potentially labeled as gay, themselves - so better to just 'eliminate the problem' altogether, because it's safer that way.

And many straight male viewers are very threatened by the idea of men being in love with other men. And most of the time that's the demographic a lot of companies are scared of losing.

As much as many societies have greatly restricted women's behavior, there's a level at which no one gives a crap what women get up to amongst themselves because they're women - i.e. they are less important than men. Women being regarded as less important than men is actually part of why lesbians are considered less threatening and controversial in media than gay men (and we're talking about mainstream society and the people producing and marketing the media, not about what fandom loves and values).
