Re: It's becuase people find lesbians less threatening than male gays.

As much as many societies have greatly restricted women's behavior, there's a level at which no one gives a crap what women get up to amongst themselves because they're women - i.e. they are less important than men. Women being regarded as less important than men is actually part of why lesbians are considered less threatening and controversial in media than gay men (and we're talking about mainstream society and the people producing and marketing the media, not about what fandom loves and values).
