I know how that is. Kinda sucks, don't it?

It's weird with fandom. I mean, some of my friends know some of the kinky thinks I've done in r/l - but even the don't know who I ship. It's like fandom's another level.

Yeah, I kind of feel the same way. It's weird. I'm trying to get over it.

I'm sorry, OP. I felt the same way about fandom IRL, but having an online persona is great. It's still me, just a version of me without details of my personal life. Learning to compartmentalize these things gives me a certain freedom to indulge myself online.

I'm put off by the fact that in some fandoms, being excited and letting your "freak flag" fly isn't "cool." Like, what's the point of a half-ass fandom that just wants the occasional fic and crappy icon posts? At least the .gifs are usually funny.

Yeah, not talking about the staff you like is not conducive to getting fandom friends.
You can also reply to others' posts and make friends that way? It works for a friend of mine. She also obsesses over fandom with people on Skype.

I find it so much easier to talk about my interests online. Not that I won't discuss them IRL, but most people I've met don't want to go into too much detail. I can spread a conversation over a three day period here on f!s (discussing different characters, story arcs, etc) and I like that.

I don't know what to suggest, though. Sometimes, especially if you're shy and kind of quiet (I can be), it can be difficult to speak about yourself or your interests. It feels too personal or you might worry that you'll sound like an idiot. IDK if those are problems for you, but whatever your reasons I hope you can find a way to be happy in fandom. (Even if its just learning to enjoy lurking.)

Maybe you're too self-aware?

(Anonymous) 2014-12-28 06:11 am (UTC)(link)
I can talk to certain people IRL about fandom stuff, but really it's only the source material. If they knew that I wrote fanfic and RP'd and stuff like that, they'd probably walk the other way. But I accept that. It's not too had to find fandom friends online, just try talking to people that have the same interests? Most people are pretty friendly and open!

What do you want to talk about, Anon?
