That series is fantastic. I loved it to death as a kid, every part of it. And looking back at it, it actually holds up pretty well. Too bad the movie was so awful and misguided.

That said, although I agree the series is awesome in a ton of different ways, I'm not sure how much of it is ripe for fan works specifically.

I haven't seen the movie so I'm curious...how/why was it awful and misguided? What did they do wrong?

Well probably the single most obvious problem is moving the setting to America, which just fundamentally doesn't work for the series.

Other than that I mostly just remember it being really bad and really simplifying all of the folklore and magic stuff. And, again, just being bad.

I thought they left in in Britain but made Will American for no good reason.

They might have done! I haven't watched it in a long time because, as see previous post, it is bad.

Yeah they did, so that American kids could relate to it. It's one of those adaptations where it's obvious no one involved cared about the book.

The guy playing Merriman called the books 'too complicated' and 'written in ye Olde English.' They cut all the Arthurian stuff, the Stantons are a dysfunctional American family, there's a Will/Maggie love subplot... I could go on. The general opinion of the fandom is "Movie? what movie?"

Unfortunately, the list I used to refer to got deleted, but the basic gist of it was that the only person working on the movie who actually cared about or liked the series was the girl who played Maggie, and it showed. If they felt they could change it, it got changed.

Whatever are you talking about? There was and is no movie.
