I loved this series when I was a kid! I think the Grey King was one of my favorite books.

sa
If internet fandom existed then, I'm sure Will/Bran would've broken my sheltered 11 year old mind, but at the same time I think deep down I actually shipped it lol.

That series is fantastic. I loved it to death as a kid, every part of it. And looking back at it, it actually holds up pretty well. Too bad the movie was so awful and misguided.

That said, although I agree the series is awesome in a ton of different ways, I'm not sure how much of it is ripe for fan works specifically.

I haven't seen the movie so I'm curious...how/why was it awful and misguided? What did they do wrong?

Well probably the single most obvious problem is moving the setting to America, which just fundamentally doesn't work for the series.

Other than that I mostly just remember it being really bad and really simplifying all of the folklore and magic stuff. And, again, just being bad.

I thought they left in in Britain but made Will American for no good reason.

They might have done! I haven't watched it in a long time because, as see previous post, it is bad.

Yeah they did, so that American kids could relate to it. It's one of those adaptations where it's obvious no one involved cared about the book.

The guy playing Merriman called the books 'too complicated' and 'written in ye Olde English.' They cut all the Arthurian stuff, the Stantons are a dysfunctional American family, there's a Will/Maggie love subplot... I could go on. The general opinion of the fandom is "Movie? what movie?"

Unfortunately, the list I used to refer to got deleted, but the basic gist of it was that the only person working on the movie who actually cared about or liked the series was the girl who played Maggie, and it showed. If they felt they could change it, it got changed.

Whatever are you talking about? There was and is no movie.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-27 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooh this secret is making me want to re-read the books. I loved them too.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-27 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Another one who loved these as a kid:) I barely remember the plot, unfortunately, but I do have the omnibus edition of my shelf. Time for a re-read!

Yep, Will/Bran is all I got out of it. Because Will/Bran is fantastic, thank you. (Well, that, and a love for certain Christmas carols.)

More seriously, I'm pretty sure if the internet had been around then, the fandom would be a lot like most fandoms--lots of shipping, some general discussion, plenty of people annoyed at the other side, and plenty of people happy to do both. I kind of agree with an above comment though; TDiR is a very complete series and doesn't really lend itself well to fanwork. and there's only so much to discuss.

There is an LJ community though, and it isn't completely dead.

Will/Bran endures!! Even when I was twelve and didn't know homosexuality was something that existed I was side-eyeing them.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-28 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
Same, I shipped them before I even knew what shipping is.

I remember reading The Grey King ages and ages ago and falling in love with it so that I could hunt down the entire series. I have one of my books signed by her and it's precious to me. This is the series that made me love Wales, Arthurian mythology, etc. I felt so damn bad for Will that it made my heart ache.

The movie was a travesty and I cringe every time I think about it. They turned that wonderful, close and loving family of Will's into... something that hurt the heart to view. They took away the history and the legends... they don't have the siblings or a bunch of other things.

I think a lot of people shipped Will and Bran because they possibly saw that as either the only option, or taking a serious dedication to as a servant to a king a bit too far... or simply, they had a wonderful, close friendship that could possibly be more. I know I wanted that child to have a happy ending.

I'll stop babbling about one of my all time favorite book series now...

Stop being all pretentious, this fandom has (or had, when it was still active) a large amount of Gen and also quite some fic featuring the Drews and also never had much of the usual character bashing other fandoms were guilty for. Bran may have only been in two books, but you obviously didn't read the books properly if you really think that he wasn't one of the most important characters in the book. Obviously, people are often interested in the important characters.

I've never wanted to read fic for it myself but there's usually some non Will/Bran stuff at Yuletide at least.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-30 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I loved it as a child too - and my then-best-friend and I had plenty of fics, spin-offs (and Mary-Sues etc., naturally, being most into this stuff aged about 11 or 12), art... I'm glad other people remember it too!
