My question is, why would anyone pay for that in the first place? I can go into any one of my fandoms or even just to my friends and say "Is anyone willing to beta-read a fic for me?" and get at least five people offering to do it for free.

This. If you're trying to sell something that's widely offered for free, then it better come with skils or a service you're just not going to get in any of the dozens of 'find a beta' venues. Bearing in mind that the majority of fanfic writers aren't in a position to pay for things like this in the first place, it doesn't seem especially lucrative.

While it's admirable that OP's friend is trying to offer something for the cash, you suspect they'd be better off just explaining their situation and asking for donations. Like OP, there are probably people who'd gladly donate but for various reasons don't want anything they're offering to sell.

da

True, but I've had some people offer to beta-read who didn't actually do much of anything. I think some folks think of it as a super-quick proofread for obvious errors.

The one time I had a really amazing beta-reading, I learned afterwards that the beta had also worked as a professional editor. She was absolute gold. And yes, I'd absolutely consider paying for her services in future ♥

you mean five people offering it to do it for free (which is quite a lot), three people who never read it, one person who takes so long it isn't worth the wait, one person who says "it's good" and nothing more... and one person who tries to rewrite it in their own style.

No, I mean five people who will beta-read it for free and do it well. That's how I get betas for my fics.

oho, now I see how unbelievable it must be to get any other result than your own limited experience.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-28 04:08 am (UTC)(link)
you do know that there are entire websites and forums dedicated to fic betaing services, right? if you can't get a good beta for free you're doing something wrong.

I want to live in your world. take me with you!

nayrt - If you're this snarky when searching for a beta, I'm beginning to see why you have trouble finding a good one. If you actually cared about this, you should try asking the above anon what fandom they write for and how they solicit people to help them since they're having a much greater success of it than you.

Buuuuut I guess being a snot about your failures is a way to pass the time, too?

(Anonymous) 2014-12-28 05:01 am (UTC)(link)
What is this feeling? So sudden and new? I've never been gotten critiqued like this before. Yes... yes.

Anon! Will you be my beta and make me the luckiest author alive?

(Anonymous) 2014-12-28 06:51 am (UTC)(link)
I'll critique you: 4/10 for trolling.

If you do honestly want a beta, then I'll stand by what I said above. Finding a really good beta is a challenge, and all the good ones I know don't take the kind of shit you seem to want to dish out. They don't need to, plenty of people out there who'll value their skills and not feel the need to vent their insecurities on them.
