Variety was exactly what I was getting at, actually.

That's literally the concept of narrative balance: the art of not making a story maintain a constant one-note emotional spectrum. The most used techniques tend to be having characters joke about something during or after an especially horrific scene in order to have the next horrific scene still be impactful.
