Posting fanfic/fanart online is nice because there's a ready audience who's willing to engage and leave comments.

It's also stressful for the very same reasons.

Sounds like you're working this out in a sensible way to see what works for you. I did a similar thing, but for fanfic. I changed my user name and moved fandoms. Best of all I started posting in anon memes only. There's much less of those horrible cliques and fawning which follows BNFs around in an anon meme. And if one of my fics drops into obscurity, well, so do those of BNFs, so I worry less about the fact that X is getting so much more attention than me, and their fic is shockingly terrible. I still feel that way occasionally, but much less.

Sometimes I fantasize about submitting some of these other terrible fanfics which are inexplicably popular to fanfic mocking blogs. I never do it, because it would be mean-spirited, but just imagining it is highly therapeutic.
