Re: fandom stuff you're super defensive about

He is such a frustrating creator. Honestly I think I would find him less frustrating if I liked him less because then he would just be someone I could ignore. But I loved huge parts of Eleven's run and there's some things about his stuff on Who that are just totally brilliant and that makes it so much worse when he keeps having the same issues, not just with gender, but with plot and themes as well. I mean that's probably why I personally pay more attention to him than I should I think. It's just that he's always so close but then something goes wrong and you're just like goddammit Moffat

Narcissism of small differences I guess

Oh, I have no problem with that. Parts of his stuff frustrate me too. It is the "Moffat is the devil, he can't do anything right, everyone must hate him and anyone who disagrees is objectively wrong" stuff that makes me defensive.

Oh yeah that does annoy me as well. The idea that there's some kind of LINE IN THE SAND and you have to pick a side and join the fight against Moffat like he's some kind of devil.

Actually I also get annoyed at people who are similarly ridiculous but in favor of Moffat but there are far fewer of those

I answered below, but yeah, IAWTC. Moderate middle ground. There are legitimate reasons to dislike the man's writing, but the whole hysterical accusation-flinging SJW shrieking versus the he-can-write-no-wrong hero-worship that occurs in pits like, say, Tumblr? Nah. Just nah.

"overarching plots" ???

THE PLOT IS A LIE

Re: fandom stuff you're super defensive about

Yes! The plots make no sense!

When Moffat first took over I hoped so much that Doctor Who would continue to be the same amazing show I loved, and when the plots started to fall apart (don't even get me started on the Silence or River Song), I just became so disappointed. And now I"m pretty much a full-on Moffat-hater, even though some of the stuff he's done is my favorite. My all-time fave episode -- The Doctor Dances. And I loved Eleven, Amy, and Rory. But I just feel like Moffat is a terrible show-runner, and he's taking a show I loved, and slowly ruining it. It's very disappointing.

Don't get me started LOL. Even reading the recaps gives me a headache. It's like a speed-addicted magpie pecking away furiously at a keyboard. "Ooh! SHINY!"

I mean, viewing ANY Moffat-written episode is like:

1. Well, THAT happened.
2. WHY did that just happen?
3. Wait, WHAT just happened?
4. What's happening NOW?
(4a. Repeat steps 1-4 three times.)
5. What the hell just happened?
6. TFW you come to the crushing realization that you just lost a perfectly good hour of your very short life....

And don't forget Step 5a: Push the giant reset button so none of the things REALLY happened after all.

Eh, there definitely are plots even if they don't always work out - season 6, with the best will in the world, was a failure, but that doesn't mean the plots don't exist.

Now you can certainly make arguments against mog fan's style of storytelling but that's a very different thing

Name one. Name me ONE plot. Even one that didn't work out. Name me ONE plot, written by Steven Moffat, that demonstrates coherent, cogent, motivation, focus, and action.

I don't even need a beginning, middle, and end. Just a plot that moves the story forward (even backward IDEC) sensibly.

I mean

We clearly both know about all the plots, it's not like I'm going to spring some episode or season you haven't heard of. I'm going to mention something and you're going to say it sucks, because why would you even ask the question if you didn't think they all sucked. What a weird way to phrase it

That said I thought the overarching plot of season 5 was good and worked.

AYRT

Well, okay, the first thing is: I never said the plots sucked. I said they were lacking. As in, I see nothing resembling a cogent, coherent, well-constructed plot, that grabs, and holds, my attention, and entertains me all the way through, with a good storyline. I do not see this in individual episodes, nor even the "overarching plots" you mention. To me, those "overarching plots" (what I would call very loose attempts at continuity that usually neither work nor stick) seem to change whenever Moffat decides they need to change...for no logical (in-universe logical) reason whatsoever.

See, I have been posting constructive criticism all through this thread, yet everyone else is talking about all "the hate." I honestly don't care if the man himself is blue-and-purple-polka-dotted, eats mealworms for breakfast, and spews acid out his face at his enemies. My only criticism is for the writing. Regardless of the individual who wrote it.

Uh, yup, proving my point. This thread is about stuff people are defensive about and of course it devolves into Moffat hate and insisting that there is only one right way to view his stuff.

Ehhh, I guess? I'm not seeing a lot of hate. A bit of back-and-forth on style and plot and such.
