Learning languages for fandom

Inspired by the first secret, natch. Have you ever learned a language for fandom? How about used fandom as a motivator for getting better with a language you were already learning?

I did and now I'm fluent in English and living in the UK. Now, I'm learning Danish and it's going great!

Not fandom exactly, but there are so many languages I'd love to learn to be able to read books in the original language instead of relying on translations.

I've been seriously considering picking up Latin. Not exactly 'for fandom', but so many of the fannish things I've liked have been about or inspired by ancient Rome. I studied French, and a bit of Old Norse, so I think it might be fun.

I spent a few years learning Swedish so I could read more things by writers I liked. Some of them got translated into English faster than I could learn, but I like being able to read them (more or less) in the original language.

Started learning Japanese about a year ago because my main anime fandom right now has a crapton of side materials and I realized how much it kinda sucks having to desperately hope someone comes along and translates them. That and so I could actually read all the doujinshi I buy. I'm not quite confident enough in my skills to try and translate anything for public consumption yet, but I've reached the "can get a pretty good idea of what's going on in a manga by reading the raws" stage, so I'm happy. (My goal is to someday be able to manage a light novel, at the very least.)

my primary goal when I started learning Japanese was so that I could sing along with and read interviews with my favourite Visual Kei bands.

English is actually my third language, learned for and by fandom.
I'm French and I first learned Spanish in school (by choice: I didn't want to have anything to do with English when I was a kid because Fuck America Owns The World, and I was afraid German would be too hard to learn. Now I regret not knowing German.)

I was never very good at English until the 7th grade and then I discovered fanfiction and in the end I was fluent and studied English literature and lingustics at university.
