Fallen London is everything but the hard SF, it is free, text heavy, with incredible lore and writing and death is just an inconvenience/ an opportunity to get even more lore and other things!
Winterstrike is a bit more SF, but it is shorter.

If you take the visual novel suggestions, look here for interesting ones:
http://renai.us/ These are all free ones. So the quality varies a lot.

They mostly are focused on romance, but some non-romantic ones exist.
http://renai.us/game/adrift is a favorite. but it has some deaths in it if you make the wrong choices.

Cyanide-tea make a lot of good, pay what you want ones. They play with the typical tropes of these games a lot. This is a favorite of mine, the "True route" is excelent.
Cinders is an excellent commercial one.
Dysfuncional Systems is another, but it has two parts and part 1 has two endings, (spoiler) neither is nice.
