Question, re: Secret 8
(Anonymous) 2014-12-30 12:30 am (UTC)(link)My question: Is it possible to get games these days are that basically like walkthrough novels on this mythical "easy" setting? I.e., no grinding, no dying, no resets, no weird traps, interesting characters/plot/worldbuilding/storylines? Like the Choose Your Own Adventures books. (Yeah, yeah, now I'm really dating myself.) Would prefer hard SF, but I am so not into the shoot-everything-you-see-as-you-meander-through-the-apocalypse thing.
TL;DR: Old fart wants to try new entertainment sources but doesn't want to have to work (too hard) for them.

(I wish there were more games like those, tbh. I love 'regular' games, but TWD games are very immersive and cool.)

(Anonymous) 2014-12-30 01:38 am (UTC)(link)I'll look up Telltale Games, thanks! Question, I assume The Walking Dead is based on the TV show with the zombies?

(Anonymous) 2014-12-30 01:40 am (UTC)(link)Thanks, I didn't even know visual novels were a thing! (I always thought this was the latest term for trade paperbacks/hardcopy graphic novels, tbh.)
Re: Question, re: Secret 8
lol All kidding aside, this entirely depends on how much effort you think is too much effort. I've been playing games since the 80's and these days almost all modes feel too easy to me for almost all games. I don't know that I can fairly judge how difficult something would be for someone who has never picked up a controller/mouse before.
You can definitely look up games by genre, but to be frank I think you might have to be willing to accept that it's going to be really hard to get into for the first little bit while you develop those motor pathways. Even on easy modes.
Re: Question, re: Secret 8
Winterstrike is a bit more SF, but it is shorter.
If you take the visual novel suggestions, look here for interesting ones:
http://renai.us/ These are all free ones. So the quality varies a lot.
They mostly are focused on romance, but some non-romantic ones exist.
http://renai.us/game/adrift is a favorite. but it has some deaths in it if you make the wrong choices.
http://taarradhin.cyanide-tea.net/
Cyanide-tea make a lot of good, pay what you want ones. They play with the typical tropes of these games a lot. This is a favorite of mine, the "True route" is excelent.
Cinders is an excellent commercial one.
Dysfuncional Systems is another, but it has two parts and part 1 has two endings, (spoiler) neither is nice.
