Internet addiction?
(Anonymous) 2014-12-31 12:00 am (UTC)(link)I have to use my laptop daily for work, including the internet, and it's super frustrating to try to control that click-click-click urge every second that I'm working.
So do you have tips for this? Coping mechanisms or rules? Extensions? I've been looking for a plug-in that will let me program a shut-down time for my internet access, but so far I've only found ones that let you shut off access immediately, not set a time like "block all websites starting at 9pm daily." Any other resources you know of?
Re: Internet addiction?
You're probably using the internet as a distraction from things that are bothering you. Maybe you can channel that urge into something more productive that doesn't make you feel so bad about all the time spent on it.
Sometimes I feel myself just wasting time on the internet too because there are things that I just don't want to think about but I'm too depressed to do anything else. I force myself to pick up one of my hobbies, telling myself that I just have to spend five minutes on it and if I don't get into it then I can put it down. I usually do get into it once I get started. And then I end up doing something I feel better spending time on. It really helps me to be able to point to something like a piece of writing or knitting and go "this is what I did today", even if I'm still not addressing what it is that had me looking for a distraction in the first place. In the long run, it's probably best to look at what I'm trying to avoid though.
Re: Internet addiction?
If you have started to feel like your internet use is impacting your life, it's time to seek some counselling for it and to also address those other issues. Trying to control the symptoms of your addiction without examining the underlying cause is like putting a band aid on a gangrenous wound and hoping that will solve the problem.
Find some resources in your area. There should be psychologists that specialize in addiction. Beware of unlicensed therapists who promise painless or easy results (e.g. kick your addiction through hypnosis).
Good luck, OP.
