While that person was (a) trolling and (b) wrong, I do think it's a relevant distinction to point out that the matter for concern was her service in the Israeli military, not her nationality as such.

Again I still think that argument is wrong but I do think that's a significant difference.

Israel has compulsory conscription. Yes, it was an attack on her nationality, because it was an attack on a condition of Israeli citizenship.

Yes, that is one of the reasons I think the argument is wrong in the first place. But like, that doesn't mean it's as if they never made the argument. It's still a distinction. Even if it's one that's ultimately stupid.

Well... a condition of South African citizenship was being part of Apartheid. You could be totally against it but still benefit from it as a white person. If someone wanted to cast a white South African as Superman during the Apartheid era, that would probably be a legit criticism of the casting choice, no matter how nice the dude was. If he were openly opposing Apartheid, sure, but if not? That sends a message.

It's a condition of her citizenship, but it isn't as if it's impossible to critique that without delving into racism or weirdly personal attacks. I don't like someone pro-IDF playing Wonder Woman because of specific traits of that character. That's got nothing to do with the actress' ethnicity.

If I remember correctly, it was after she said something pro-IDF, not just because she'd previously served some years before. I think she tweeted(?) some pro-IDF statements around the same time the IDF killed those kids on the beach. Maybe shortly before? I forget.
No, I think it was during the bombing campaign, so it would have been in the middle of that whole terrible mess.

So, I understand where Gadot was coming from and where the criticism was coming from. But it wasn't just because she's Israeli.
