Re: Non-Fandom Secrets: Fucked Up Friday Edition!

this is only technically non fandom because it's about f! itself. It's also a long story so fair warning if you don't like long stories.

I've been visiting F!s for YEARS. I remember back when it was like 29 secrets/day and 3 pages of comments. I had a livejournal and used to comment under the livejournal's name. Probably no one here would recognize the name if I told it (except possibly dethtoll but afaik we never interacted), but I'm not gonna tell it anyway. You young'uns weren't there, but back in, like, 2011 or so F!S would go through phases where it was like insane nutjob SJW central. The REAL kind of insane nutjob SJW, the kind that go around taunting previously suicidal people and telling them they deserved to be that way because they disagreed with the insane nutjob SJWs on what percentage of representation was acceptable for whatever demographic.

Anyhoo. I discovered F!S shortly after arriving at college, which was the first time I had ever had unsupervised access to the internet, because I grew up in a super sheltered highly religious family. There were a lot of things out there that I hadn't heard of before, that most people have experienced, and practically every day was a learning experience for me. One of the things that I failed to learn, until the events I am about to relate, was that it is a stupid thing to get involved in fandom-related wank (or any wank) online, especially if you have a lot more zeal than experience being involved in wank.

One day someone posted a very angry secret about how they headcanoned some game character as transgendered and hated that people disagreed with them because obviously that meant those people were transphobic. I had literally never encountered the concept of transgender-ness in my life before I saw that secret, and I was greatly confused and commented on it asking what the secret meant. Several people threw a fit at me for being ignorant (and therefore presumably transphobic) but didn't bother to enlighten me. So I asked them to explain the concept or point me in the direction of resources that would explain it, and you might have thought I set them on fire for the incandescent levels of hatred that poured forth - for you see, I had unwittingly angered a pack of "EDUCATE YOURSELF IT IS NOT MY JOB TO EDUCATE YOU OMG JUST GOOGLE IT ALREADY YOU SHITLORD WTF IS WRONG WITH YOU THAT YOU DON'T ALREADY KNOW ABOUT THIS STUFF" types.

I tried explaining that I didn't trust blindly googling to take me to a resource I could trust because I would have no way of telling if it was a good source or not, because I DID NOT KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT TRANS PEOPLE OR EVEN WHAT THEY WERE, REALLY, but I had already been perma-labeled a hatemongering anti-trans bigot by the "EDUCATE YOURSELF IT IS NOT MY JOB TO EDUCATE YOU OMG JUST GOOGLE IT ALREADY YOU SHITLORD WTF IS WRONG WITH YOU THAT YOU DON'T ALREADY KNOW ABOUT THIS STUFF" types. At least one, possibly several, of them thereafter stalked my f!s comments and repeatedly harassed me about it and accused me of hating trans people and wishing them harm all the time and generally made my f!s experience so unpleasant that I just ended my LJ and took to browsing F!s anon without commenting. I don't think Case necessarily noticed this because he had about a million bigger fish to fry (threads like the one where I got dogpiled happened daily, often multiple times daily in fact, and frankly I have no idea how he managed to wade through it all and keep F!s functioning. I never complained to him about it anyway because half the users in the comm got harassed/verbally attacked by nutcases all the time (some of them worse than me, on a whole bunch of topics, I just wasn't used to dealing with it and gave up much easier) and ain't no one got time for that.

Eventually I did go back to commenting (anon) once the comm began to see an overhaul of users and calm down a lot. Obviously I'm still doing this, lol. I think that the person(s?) who whines and bitches that f!s is dyyyyingggg because it has less users than it used to needs a reality check because I remember when F!S had a crapload of users AND IT SUCKED MONKEY BUTT OK, 2/3 OF THE USERS WERE ASSFACE JERKOFFS AND THERE WAS NOTHING BUT WANK FOREVER. I may admittedly be somewhat biased here, and I can admit that being younger and stupider and less experienced in the ways of the internet, I did not always resist the urge to get involved in the wank. (A few times I was even an assface jerkoff, although I tried not to make a habit of it.) But my point is that even with less users now, F!S is truckloads better place than it used to be, and nicer, and more fun, and way way way less wanky and dramatic in very bad ways, and I'd just like to take this opportunity to say thanks a million to Case for not saying "fuck this shit" and nuking the comm back when it was Loud Angry Hateful Jackass Central.

Come back to us op! Reveal yourself!

I only saw the tail end of it, as the SJW's began to pull away into the tumblr void where they now congregate. But yeah, there were things that made the bandit mask incident look sane and reasonable.

I agree that, while I'd like a little more activity on the secret front, mostly I'm here for general comments nowadays. It's a lot... friendlier? Way easier to just chill out and talk about whatever than it used to be, and with things like Shitstream and the various games and stuff that goes on, it's really the best time I've ever had interacting with fandom people, since I was never much of a social butterfly.

Sorry to say that I don't remember your incident although I was probably around for it, since I generally didn't read the comments unless I had something to say, but that sounds like it sucked and thanks for sticking around anyway.

I used the just read the secrets/comments and never comment unanon back in those days because man, I remember it was crazy. I remember I said the Marvel movies were eye-candy movies and I got mildly dog piled for a comment I thought was pretty innocent. (Because that was just like my opinion man and I should put opinions in other people's mouths and...)

Ironically I thought 2011 was F!S peak.

Geass week has yet to be beaten.

Still, glad you've decided to come back anon.

2012's my vote.

Ideal amount of secrets and wank, but with less sj insanity.

Back when the site was popular enough to have a mock thread on Something Awful

Actually that was probably more like 2010

PYF right.

They posted one of me secrets, and I knew I'd made it. I'm sure that was still around until 2012. Made for a great hate read.

I think I might actually remember this.

I definitely prefer the way things are now. I lurked back when we were on LJ sometimes it felt like morbid curiosity was the only thing that had me looking at the comments. I doubt I would have stopped lurking if things stayed the same.

I remember back when it was like 29 secrets/day and 3 pages of comments. I had a livejournal and used to comment under the livejournal's name

Only 29? Weak. We used to get like 150-200 secrets a day
