Okay, so let's all just stare at the walls then.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-03 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, because it's not like there aren't a million and one options for free entertainment out there or anything.

Like staring at the walls. Or watching paint dry. Or arguing with dethtoll on Fandom Secrets.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-03 02:46 am (UTC)(link)
Like a library. Or the radio. Or Hulu/Crackle/Crunchyroll/whatever. Or all of those free computer games out there. Or webcomics.

Shall I go on?

(Anonymous) 2015-01-03 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
But all of those things do require money.

In order to get to a library, you need some sort of transportation. Depending on how far away it is, walking isn't always an option, and even public transportation can be too costly. In order to listen to the radio you need something that can pick up a radio signal--something you would have had to buy previously with money. Hulu/Crackle/Crunchyroll/any other website requires a personal computer. Have you ever tried to sit in the library and watch Hulu on a public computer? This is assuming that your library has funding for "new" computers, and isn't just a row of ancient CRT monitors and outdated copies of Windows.

"Free" entertainment of this variety doesn't exist.

they're a hell of a lot cheaper than a console and videogames or buying dvds, though. all you really need for most of those things is a computer, and you can get a perfectly good computer for a lot less than a videogame console. plus these days i would argue a computer with an internet connection is a necessity anyway, as almost all job applications and the like require that you send them in online, a lot of bills add an extra fee if you pay them via check instead of online pay, etc.

Yeah, but who the fuck are you to tell someone what they do with their money? If they want to buy a fucking video game for their kid or themselves (because let's be real here not everyone has access to a library or any of the other "free" things you listed) don't you fucking dare judge them.

Fuck, you piss me off.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-03 05:17 am (UTC)(link)
i never said that, but thanks for putting words in my mouth. i was just pointing out that the things the other anon had suggested were relatively cheap forms of entertainment compared to a lot of other things.

people can buy whatever the heck they want as long as they aren't putting themselves into the red because of it.

[personal profile] dethtoll 2015-01-03 05:24 am (UTC)(link)
That is EXACTLY what you are doing.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-03 05:38 am (UTC)(link)
then fine, yes i judge people who make irresponsible financial decisions. i've had friends come to me begging for a loan saying they couldn't make rent or pay their cellphone bill or whatever when meanwhile just a week earlier they'd posted pictures on facebook of this collector's edition video game they got or that 3ds.

if you do shit like that, hell yes i'm going to judge you because that's being stupid and irresponsible.

That is not what I am fucking talking about and you fucking know it, you dishonest little thing.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-03 06:11 am (UTC)(link)
you put words in my mouth, i do it to you. it's fair trade.

[personal profile] dethtoll 2015-01-03 06:15 am (UTC)(link)
I did not put words in your mouth. I accused you of doing exactly what you are doing and you tried to claim you didn't say that. And then you do exactly what you're claiming I did to you, you chuffing hypocrite.

This conversation is over.

goddamn just shut up, you sound like herpymcderp with your crippling need for the last word

(Anonymous) 2015-01-03 07:01 am (UTC)(link)
OVER!!!

(Anonymous) 2015-01-03 10:22 am (UTC)(link)
Awww, you're a cute little thing, but I often find myself worrying that you're on the internet way past your bedtime. Little kids like you should have some warm milk and a story at this time of night, not talking to strangers.

You stay warm and safe on your little walk to school in the morning, okay?

(Anonymous) 2015-01-03 02:37 pm (UTC)(link)
you are kind of a stupid person

you're getting desperate, aren't you?

(Anonymous) 2015-01-03 01:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Libraries are only open so long, some have pretty strict time restrictions about how long or much you can get out in one day. Some libraries even block sites for watching media, or social media because they believe the internet is supposed to be a knowledge tool at the library. Libraries also have started blocking ddl'ing and torrenting. So they may be a limited free source of entertainment, but it's not some be all end all source for it.

Not to mention that you take a risk bringing in book mites, bed bugs, and other pest when you bring stuff home. Which is going to set you back a whole lot more than getting some things for enjoyment.
