Yes, it is. It's called New Zealand. The only difference is, no elves. I know, I know. "But what's the point of having a Rivendell without the elves?" Do you really want a bunch of a snotty people judging you 24/7? Give me the Shire any day.

But elves are so pretty

But yes obviously I'd rather live in the Shire any day

They need that pretty to cover up the ugly.

For me it's mostly the architecture, though, less the landscape. Sometimes I think "if I won that lottery, I'd rebuild Rivendell/Hobbiton/Meduseld/etc". *g* I'd love to live in any of those.

This makes me sad. New Zealand has its good points but it's not Middle-earth. A lot of the landscapes don't match the books. I do think the scenery is gorgeous but I wish that Middle-earth and New Zealand were not automatically synonymous.

True that. I lived there a while, and one of my friends lived near... it was either Helm's Deep or the Mines of Moria, I forget which, and it was an abandoned quarry. I never would've known it was used in Lord of the Rings if I hadn't been told.

Truth be told, I liked New Zealand far BETTER than I would like Middle Earth. It is singularly devoid of dangerous wildlife, which is more than I can say from Australia, where fucking EVERYTHING tries to kill you.

As a European friend once said to me, New Zealand does not have the sort of evidence for an ancient defunct culture in the landscapes. No old earthworks, ancient roads, not enough ruins. New Zealand is too pristine for Middle Earth, where Eriador alone should have piles of remnants of Arnor once being there.

That's a really interesting reaction, because I'd predict the Shire to be at least as judgey as Rivendell, in that nosey, small-town way. I feel like the Rivendell elves might gently dismiss me as ephemeral and ultimately irrelevant to them, but it's people in the Shire who'd care that I forgot three people's names and haven't found a husband yet. (Not everyone in either place, of course.)

I agree. The Shire looks lovely, but I wouldn't be able to stand the gossips, the busy bodies, the pettiness. Bilbo could barely tolerate it (not that he was easy to get along with either.)

I think the Elves would be more tolerant and less intrusive.

Heeeee. I could probably deal with the Shire better because what you've described sounds a lot like living in a small, Southern town. I can handle that. I don't like everything about it, but I love some parts of it (like Hamfast's wife bringing me dinner every night for a month after the baby is born or the Proudfeet across the way pitching in to thatch my roof after the storm).

I think I can handle people nosy as shit about me better than I can them thinking I ultimately don't matter at all.

YMMV, of course, and if I lived next door to Lobelia, perhaps I'd change my mind. LOL

The only difference is, no elves.

And about forty million more sheep.

I've been to New Zealand and while it's gorgeous, it's not Rivendell. Even the filming location doesn't really resemble the film much at all.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-04 05:26 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, hobbits seem pretty judgemental too. All up in each other's business.

I kind of feel like that's, if not what Tolkien was going for, at least not a mile away. I mean that's the kind of emotional response that the passing of the elves is supposed to bring. It is sad that there's no more Rivendell.

A magical place without pain, and with gorgeous people with cool weapons and pretty dresses? Can't say I blame you for wishing it was real.

aww, LOTRO, i miss you LOTRO, though i'm quite happy in GW2 land now.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-03 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree. I've always loved Rivendell. It seems opening and welcoming with the knowledge and wisdom of the Elves but with travelers from all over coming there too. I think it was really special.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-03 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
There is a Rivendell housing neighborhood here in Oklahoma. :V

Yup. Me too. It was so pretty. I loved the waterfall and the way it was built into the hills. Easily my favorite LOTR location. It just looked so peaceful. I also really liked Lothlorian. The Elvish locations in these movies are just gorgeous.

I imagine Tolkien had to base it on someplace real

It was Lauterbrunnental in Switzerland, one of the deepest valleys in the alps. There may not be any elves there irl, but it's still an absolutely stunning place!
