I admit to having conflicted feelings about Firefly, but the opportunity was just too much to pass up.

Firefly's a good show. I liked it. But the sort of idolatry Whedon gets makes me really uncomfortable, because usually, my response to his media is "yeah, it's good, I enjoyed it, but am not hugely attached (usually because he killed the characters I like and have no more interest.)"

Aside from that, there were a couple things, mostly to do with the characters and relationships. I REALLY didn't like how Mal treated Inara. Inara reminds me a lot of my sister, and I would NEVER want a guy (a LOVE INTEREST) to treat her the way Mal treats Inara. I couldn't find it charming or sweet at all, it mostly just brought out my, "you are a DICK," feelings. This was enough to make me pretty cold on Mal in general--unfortunate, since he was a major character.

The characters I liked most were Inara, Kaylee, River, and Book. But Inara and Kaylee were involved in romance plots that I didn't care for at all, Book doesn't get the story he deserves, and River kinda got stuck as the Crouching Loony Hidden Badass, which is not a trope I'm a big fan of.

So yeah. TL;DR, parts of it I liked a lot, but other parts really rubbed me wrong.
