The only real difference between it and most other fandoms is that it's very old. Any canon that continues, in one form or another, for five decades is going to have similar issues. And, yes, you're looking in the wrong corner. There's loads of places that are fun to hang out in, it just might take you a little longer to find the part that suits you because there's so much out there.
