Eh, I like him okay myself, but he doesn't have very good judgment and he can come across as not learning from his mistakes. That can really grate.

Yeah, I get that. His caring was sometimes a flaw.

But to be fair, that character flaw never really amounts to anything threatening. Any subplot (that I remember) that stemmed from Hagrid having poor judgment ended happily. Not that that invalidates the complaint, I just think it'd be easier to dislike him if this were a consistent thing that was causing others a lot of grief (especially instead of just himself, such as the Buckbeak incident)
