I don't really understand how anyone could not like Hagrid. He was the first person to show Harry love and care since he was a baby. Sure, his taste in pets was questionable and his brother caused problems, but he cared for people and animals and magical creatures all the same and he was loving person all around.

Eh, I like him okay myself, but he doesn't have very good judgment and he can come across as not learning from his mistakes. That can really grate.

Yeah, I get that. His caring was sometimes a flaw.

But to be fair, that character flaw never really amounts to anything threatening. Any subplot (that I remember) that stemmed from Hagrid having poor judgment ended happily. Not that that invalidates the complaint, I just think it'd be easier to dislike him if this were a consistent thing that was causing others a lot of grief (especially instead of just himself, such as the Buckbeak incident)

It's mysterious to me as well. He's just a big kind lovable goofball. But it's a funny world I guess

I find him annoying, but wouldn't say I hate him. I dislike large-"funny"-bumbling-but-loveable-oaf types, and he's not even an original take on it. And have a very low tolerance for phonetic dialects. So annoying.

Yes, I don't mind Hagrid but I haaaaaaaate phonetic dialects, especially when they're used as class indicators as JKR does. I mean, Hogwarts is in Scotland, you should be writing out everyone's accent except McGonagall's and (from the movies at least) Cho Chang's. No? I guess everyone else is just normal except Hagrid and foreigners then.

I loved Hagrid. I think he's a good person.
But I loath him as a teacher. I always felt like it was written in a way that we knew he wasn't a good one, but we were also supposed to be on his side? Harry and Ron being all annoyed with people who thought the substitute teacher was better than him was also annoying. Does that make any sense?

Yeah, I kind of felt that too. As anything but a teacher I can empathize, and in a way I can also understand their feelings - they cared for him, and it was obvious he was trying. Their reactions were very believable, but... he really wasn't a very good teacher.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-04 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, he was a bad teacher, but we know he's a good guy who was really excited about getting the position, and really passionate about the animals. We also know that Malfoy, who is trying to screw him over, is doing it (mostly) unjustly, and out of cruelty. So Hagrid's a bad teacher, but not for lack of heart or knowledge, and that makes it easier to feel bad for him when things don't work out. Especially when the antagonist is one of the bad guys.

But--Harry is also portrayed as realizing Hagrid is not the best at his job of Professor. I don't think that fits in with "we were also supposed to be on his side."

Not OP

I appreciate what Hagrid means for/to Harry, but that doesn't mean I want to read about him. Others have mentioned why.
