Re: been musing about this but not sure what to think

I agree that being overweight is all things equal less healthy. But to me the point with weight and health is that health is a continuum, not a binary state, and there are a lot of different ways to be more or less healthy, and transporting standards of physical beauty into health doesn't help anyone with that.

Or to put it in other terms, screaming "Lose some weight, fatty!" at someone is not actually medical advice

Yeah, many things affect health. But there is never a time when a doctor will go, "You know, being 100 pounds overweight is really helping your health!"

Of course not. That's not my point. My point is the conversation shouldn't begin and end with "you're a hundred pounds overweight". And also that it's a conversation to have with a doctor not with random people on the street. Not to mention the kind of implicit moral judgment that often sneaks in under the cover of a supposed concern with health.

A lot of weight-related health issues are cumulative over time, though. It's not like you eat a cake and suddenly you're diabetic and your arteries are clogged up and your joints can no longer support you.

So you can remain at a heavier weight for some time before the effects begin to show. Unfortunately, by the time they do you're looking at long-term and chronic conditions that will only get worse and need more and more intervention.

So if you're 20 and 100 lbs overweight (which I was close to) then you can get away for a good few years with your blood pressure, sugar levels, cholesterol etc. in a 'healthy' range. But if you KEEP doing what you're doing, in 20 years they're not going to be.

Again I'm not trying to say that being overweight isn't unhealthy.

THIS, a thousand times. My aunt was overweight for years. It wasn't a big deal at first, but she ended up needing a knee replacement in her 50s because the extra stress on her joints wrecked her knees. Her knees are permanently fucked up because of it, but it wasn't something that was noticeable right away.
