Re: been musing about this but not sure what to think

There's a really important distinction between being accepting of people who are fat and encouraging unhealthy lifestyles. This is especially true with kids - childhood obesity is so sad because of how it hurts children but they kids themselves don't deserve to be ridiculed as they often are.

This article isn't really anything new.

(Also, who actually says you're not "allowed" to be attracted to certain body types? I'm sure it's out there, but I haven't seen it - is this really common somewhere?)

In experience, it's basically a few people feeling they're being attacked for not being attracted to fat people, when really they're being attacked for being rude about how unattractive they find fat people. Because apparently preference and courtesy are mutually exclusive.

Oh. Sadly, that doesn't really surprise me at all. :/

I've seen it on Tumblr. "Your so-called preference for thin white cis bodies is just cultural programming and until you make a serious and sustained effort to overcome it you can't call yourself an ally."

God, I wonder if it hurt to get their head that far up their own ass.

oh, gracious. An "ally"? For what? Are they elevating fat acceptance to the same level as, like, LGBT issues??

DA

Some of them, yes. I was told I was a bad lesbian because I said I was gonna help my girlfriend loose weight. Never mind that she asked me to help her...

lol wow, that's illogical in like three different ways.

The problem is that unhealthy foods are cheaper. I'm betting you a majority of obese kids are from lower-income households. I can get cheap shit for a good price. I can get half that in healthy food for the same price. And that's not going to last me the month.

Yeah, this is sadly true. :/ I wouldn't say that absolves you of the responsibility to teach your kids healthy eating habits as much as possible, but it does make it a lot harder and is overall very frustrating.

DA--you can also add in the fact that many lower-income parents don't have the luxury of a lot of time with their kids (scrambling to make a living is tiring and time-consuming) so there are probably a lot of things they wish they could do with/for their kids that are hard to fit in. And for those in a multi-generation cycle of being poor, scrambling for a living, and eating foods they can afford instead of foods that are high-quality... there may be some missing information on healthy choices all along the line, because they haven't been options for the parents, either.

Yeah, poverty plays into it in major ways and it really needs to be addressed. :/

Another DA:

Can't find the post/comment right now, but a teacher sent out their students to a middle-class and an urban part of town to check out the food shops. Guess where the healthy food was not only cheaper, but also easier to find? And in better quality?

I assume you mean the more impoverished parts of an urban setting? I think it's becoming more and more of A Thing to have stuff like healthy food available in hip urban communities but those tend to be the communities with money. :/
