Oh wow, that is awful. People not tagging is also one of the awful things about Tumblr. And video auto-play is really stupid in general, like...why?? (I wish Facebook would stop doing it too, but at least with FB it's only when you hover over the vid, not just it appearing on your news feed)

I KNOW. Like, missing tags, that's a mistake everyone does, but some people were getting self-righteous about it, as though not wanting to see graphic violence without warning was a sign of NOT CARING.

(Because you know, if I were someone who'd survived police brutality, that's TOTALLY the kind of shit I'd appreciate, people shoving graphic videos of it in my face to score some kind of soapbox points.)

(Anonymous) 2015-01-04 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Even if it's not graphic violence I kind of hate the mentality that not wanting to see it = not caring. I appreciate that people spread information and signal boost (though I won't get into the amount of misinformation that gets spread around tumblr...) but you know, some days I do want... A BREAK. And considering tumblr has a fandom and fun element, that is primarily what I like to use it for.

And graphic violence? Nope, not ever. I don't like things that try to shock you into caring, I don't need to see the images to care, and if you post something too graphic I'm actually LESS likely to read an article because it will make me feel so ill that I'll have to close the window.

Honestly, I don't believe that most folks HAVE that mentality, so much as they want to DISPLAY their presumed cred. They think they're being so activist and edgy when actually, all they're doing is click 'reblog.' It allows them to invest the act with far more significance than it actually has.

And yeah, I definitely need breaks from it. And uuuuuugh the misinformation. *has done a few debunking things, which of course didn't get reblogged because I guess that's just not as thrilling*

I dislike the SJ everywhere on tumblr for that reason... I just want to have fandom-y fun, I get exhausted by all the terrible news all the time. I miss forums more than LJ, tbh; if you wanted to talk about politics or whatnot, you choose that thread. But otherwise you could just choose a thread devoted to a certain TV show, for example, and chill.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-05 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah that's at least one reason why I hate that tumblr has no real organization system, before it was a bit easier to go to a site or a forum or chat room and know it was going to be dedicated to whatever you're in the mood to discuss. Things could go OT but it's easier to ignore a thread then it is to ignore a post that isn't even under a cut.

Tumblr just throws random things at you and expects you to look at ALL of it. I wish there was a way to group who I follow, I would follow so many more people if tumblr was even slightly organized.

When asked, I have described tumblr as The Waterfall O' Stuff. You just stand there and have STUFF pour down on you, and sure, if you stand there long enough, something interesting is bound to fall on your head, but good luck organizing it, searching for it, or ever finding it again later.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-04 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I wish that mindset wasn't so common.
I even had to stop following someone after they refused to tag some post with videos and photos of executions because "everyone needs to know!"

Yeah, it's part of why I'm pulling away from tumblr. That and shit like, "cutting off toxic people from your life is a social privilege!" It's like, fuck you, I became homeless doing that, don't tell me it was MY PRIVILEGE.

My general rule is, if someone who experienced what you're posting about sees your post, how would they feel? If the answer is horrified or retraumatized, RETHINK YOUR POST.

I think that sums up a lot of what's fucked up about Tumblr; they're too concerned with appearing empathetic and caring that they're actually neither. Most of them haven't got the first iota of experience with the causes they're trumpeting, but still seem to think they know better than those actually experiencing it.

Bingo. It's a problem a lot of places have, but with the tumblr reblog system and the mass social justice things there, it becomes really painfully apparent.

I think my biggest, "really guys? REALLY?" was when I had to debunk this idea that a certain term was coined by a certain marginalized population and could ONLY be used by them. I got asked by a couple baby anons (and I'm glad they asked, rather than just swallowing it wholesale) and I was able to debunk it with like, five seconds on PubMed. And then I left a longer, more thorough post about it, because I knew that I had the correct labels and street cred to challenge this bullshit without getting trolled.

It really bothers me, the sort of theme there that to question ANY sort of social justice thing is bigotry, unless you have the correct identity labels. Like, I get where it's coming from, but no seriously, the ability to critically reason is SO NECESSARY.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-04 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Critical reasoning is in short supply on Tumblr though (which may be part of the reason it's such a terrible place for even discourse as trivial in the grand scheme of things as fandom discussion).

Tumblr is more about knee-jerk over-reacting bandwagon-jumping and generally jumping and hate-mobbing on anyone who expresses even the mildest form of discord.

I'm not sure where to find critical reasoning anymore, honestly. Which is both sad and scary.

Enh, I've gotten caught by fake posts too. Again, the UI makes it worse.

For instance, if I come on F!S and say, I dunno, "Jesus was actually a Men's Rights Activist and anyone who says otherwise is MISANDRIST," people would come down on me like a sack of bricks. And then, anyone who saw my comment would see all the "NUH UH"s underneath.

However, with TUMBLR, what happens is I make a post like that, and it's very easy never to see the "NUH UH"s. Especially if my post goes viral and everyone mindlessly reblogs it without any of the commentary, so people keep rehashing the same shit over and over, unable to see that it's already been done without sorting through thousands of reblogs.

So yeah, part of it is an echo chamber effect, but the very interface makes it worse.

Pervocracy does some pretty great debunking though; surely there must be some debunking tumblrs out there, and they must have all the material they could ever want.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-05 10:30 am (UTC)(link)
I quit Tumblr for exactly that reason, actually. I'd seen a bunch of posts with misinformation come across my dashboard over time. I'd tried to correct them, but, well, I had less than a dozen followers. The misinformation had thousands of reblogs. I might as well have been yelling at a hurricane. (The final straw -- someone reposting a cutesy misdefinition of a word originally coined to justify slavery, and saying 'omg this is so me!!!') It just got too exhausting.

Ugh, yeah. If I never have to see that stupid "OMG gaiz, sugar in sodas carmelize when you heat it ISN'T THAT DISGUSTING???" post ever again, it'll still be too late.

YES GUYS. SUGAR CARMELIZES. THAT'S HOW CANDY GETS MADE. GAH.

It drives me nuts when it comes to missing people, because 9 times out of 10 a quick googling shows the person was found three years ago!
lb_lee: M.D. making a shocked, confused face (serious thought)

[personal profile] lb_lee 2015-01-06 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh man, I didn't even THINK about that! Yeah, due to tumblr's UI, it's not clear whether a missing person post is days or years old.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-05 06:30 am (UTC)(link)
I have a lot of depressed &/or spoonie tumblr-friends, and the sj-wank (pro- more than anti-, maybe, though anti-sj types can be really horrid) gets scary.

Could you NOT yell at my profoundly ill friend online over minor crap, thanks?

There was a blog that pretended to be "fandom" but also spent a lot of time ranting about their personal idea of how neurodiversity worked, which seemed uneducated to me, and they would scream about things that I thought were just stupid.

And then they went after a friend of mine. Who had an autistic brother. And is a spoonie. Because she used a word they didn't consider politically correct.

And due to my own psychiatric history, I don't think their definitions were actually even close to sensible or right.

I don't have the skillz to track them down, but I kind of wanted to say, "I'm going to call your mom."

At some point I had to just back away from the tarbaby of engaging with them.

:(

YUP. I'm still astounded THAT I haven't gotten trolled yet, despite being open about my history and weirdness.

Well, except for that one time about Foreskin Man. But that was SPECIAL.

My general rule with tumblr is, whenever I see something that makes me mad, I go, "Wait. Is this worth having an argument on tumblr for? With all its UI issues?"

The answer is pretty much always no. It's like trying to have an intellectual debate entirely on sticky notes, outside on a windy day.

[personal profile] diet_poison 2015-01-05 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I think people got really rabid with the stuff that happened recently and while caring a lot is a very good thing and talking about it is a very good thing the tunnel vision that goes along with it - especially on a place like Tumblr - can get destructive. :(
lb_lee: A happy little brain with a bandage on it, enclosed within a circle with the words LB Lee. (oplz)

[personal profile] lb_lee 2015-01-05 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
Definitely. And combined with a few other social rules of tumblr, it makes it very easy to get taken in by hoaxes and manipulators.

I mean, when ANDY BLAKE is taking your side in an argument, and getting involved, that's a sign to be alarmed.

Andy Blake...isn't he the guy with half a dozen aliases who tried to get that one lady to run away to Canada with him? and who is overall a hot mess with a side of creepy?

[personal profile] lb_lee 2015-01-05 08:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh man, that's like, barely the icing on that particular shit cake.

Dude has run multiple cults, claimed to channel hobbits and WWII child soldiers who also happened to be the kids from Narnia, and is so fucking creepy you don't even know. And he's still doing it, just moved to tumblr because it's harder to pin things on him there. There are a bunch of tumblrs that popped up purely to keep an eye on him.

Here's a bunch of links about it. I warn you, once you start reading, you won't be able to stop. I started reading back in the summer and it's blossomed into an interest in thought reform and cult behavior.

yeeeeep, that's him.

I've been down that rabbit hole before and I'm not going to do it again right now since I'm supposed to be going to bed. XD but yowch, what a clusterfuck.
lb_lee: M.D. making a shocked, confused face (serious thought)

[personal profile] lb_lee 2015-01-06 08:44 pm (UTC)(link)
It is an EPIC clusterfuck. That clusterfuck train leapt the track YEARS ago and choo-chooed off into the horizon, never to rejoin the track again.
