Just because other places are less accepting, doesn't make America more accepting. The population at large, maybe, to an extent, because a lot of people are overweight. But overweight people still make life difficult for other overweight people by bullying, etc. We are still conditioned by advertising, Hollywood, etc. to find thinness attractive and good and fatness unattractive and bad.

It may not make them flat-out accepting, but if A is less accepting than B, that does make B more accepting than A. That's how the language works.

I believe fingals meant it in the sense that it doesn't make America more accepting than America actually is. Like, other nations being less accepting does not actually increase the amount of acceptance in America.

But yea, the English language is a tricky devil.

Yes, this exactly. America may be more accepting in comparison to other countries, but that doesn't mean that America is accepting of fat people as the author of the article attempts to suppose.
