Re: been musing about this but not sure what to think

I kind of disagree with you regarding your first point. Have you ever been to any European nation or Asian nation (France, Italy, South Korea, Japan, etc.)? They are MUCH less accepting of being overweight than America.

I'm 5'2" and 125 pounds (not fat but by no means skinny) and people South Korea and Japan flat out just told me that I was too fat and needed to lose weight.

Contrast that to America, where it's considered extremely impolite to bring up someone's weight and where we have all a manner of inventions and services that cater to the overweight.

I'm not saying America is wrong to do this, just that I can't agree with you that America isn't accepting of fat people. Compared to the rest of the developed world, we are.

Just because other places are less accepting, doesn't make America more accepting. The population at large, maybe, to an extent, because a lot of people are overweight. But overweight people still make life difficult for other overweight people by bullying, etc. We are still conditioned by advertising, Hollywood, etc. to find thinness attractive and good and fatness unattractive and bad.

It may not make them flat-out accepting, but if A is less accepting than B, that does make B more accepting than A. That's how the language works.

I believe fingals meant it in the sense that it doesn't make America more accepting than America actually is. Like, other nations being less accepting does not actually increase the amount of acceptance in America.

But yea, the English language is a tricky devil.

Yes, this exactly. America may be more accepting in comparison to other countries, but that doesn't mean that America is accepting of fat people as the author of the article attempts to suppose.

Thank you. Did a double-take at that comment.

Korea is messed up though. Their attitude to beauty is unhealthy. See: widely documented evidence of Korea's plastic surgery addiction. It makes America look almost sane.

I don't know if saying "other countries are worse" is really a good argument for American being accepting. That's like saying America is very accepting of gay people because we don't sentence people to death for being gay. Sure, that's a good thing, but it doesn't make America extra-accepting and the discrimination gay people face doesn't suddenly disappear.
