Sometimes when relaying bad news, I giggle or laugh. I have no idea why; it's been perceived as me laughing at the person's misfortune, but I think it's a calming reflex. When I told my sister Robin Williams died, I laughed even though I was really sad about it. I don't know why I do this, but it bothers me for obvious reasons.

That is pretty common. It is nervousness + your brain not knowing how to hand it=crossed wires.

I wonder if that's why newsreaders smile when talking about tragic stuff?

There's a theory (I forget where I read it) that claims nervous laughter is meant to show everyone that everything is alright. Because you wouldn't laugh if there were danger, and you're laughing, so everything is safe and okay.

I'm not much one for evolutionary psychology, but that might hold water.

In any case, nervous laughter is a really common thing. Everyone deals with bad news differently. I get really sarcastic when I'm upset.

I think I remember reading that on Cracked.
