Awkward Quirks

(Anonymous) 2015-01-05 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
Anyone have them?

Sometimes when relaying bad news, I giggle or laugh. I have no idea why; it's been perceived as me laughing at the person's misfortune, but I think it's a calming reflex. When I told my sister Robin Williams died, I laughed even though I was really sad about it. I don't know why I do this, but it bothers me for obvious reasons.

That is pretty common. It is nervousness + your brain not knowing how to hand it=crossed wires.

I wonder if that's why newsreaders smile when talking about tragic stuff?

There's a theory (I forget where I read it) that claims nervous laughter is meant to show everyone that everything is alright. Because you wouldn't laugh if there were danger, and you're laughing, so everything is safe and okay.

I'm not much one for evolutionary psychology, but that might hold water.

In any case, nervous laughter is a really common thing. Everyone deals with bad news differently. I get really sarcastic when I'm upset.

I think I remember reading that on Cracked.

When eating bread, I rub the smooth part against my lips. I gotta eat food in a certain order.

I'd say about 60-65% of the time, after I finish a sentence, I'll repeat the last five or six words a little quieter. I have zero control over this, and often it's not even a complete thought as-is. Like...an example would be "This show is one of my favorites, it's so funny my favorites it's so funny." It is...the absolute weirdest thing, I really don't know why it happens. It's embarrassing.

Don't know if you're still around, anon, but what you're describing might be palilalia. It's a tic, a speech disorder that's associated with Tourette's and various shades of autism. I'd research it a bit and see if it rings true for you, then maybe bring it up with your doctor if it really bothers you or inhibits your daily activity at all.

My entire personality. :(

When I'm concentrating on something else, I will often whistle through my teeth, softly and tunelessly, just random eighth notes. I never know I'm doing this until either my consciousness suddenly jolts into awareness of it, or, more often, a friend says "You're doing it again."

I can't concentrate on what I'm saying if I look someone in the eye. I can when they talk, but I have to look away when I do, or I start speaking complete nonsense. I'm not afraid of them or anything, it just breaks my concentration.

I hum more or less constantly. Whatever song happens to be stuck in my head at the moment, over and over again, usually without being aware of it unless someone mentions it.

When I eat at work, I tend to leave food on my desk for inordinate amounts of time. It drives my co-workers crazy, apparently, because they have to stare at it when they walk by.

Also, when I eat pot pies, I take out all the processed chicken chunks first.

my mom's friend's son smashes pot pies before eating them.

I have to move around when I'm talking on the phone and actively engaged in a conversation.
