TW: Rape discussion

(Anonymous) 2015-01-05 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
Urgh, yes. I was doing fairly well avoiding this sort of stuff, just following blogs that posted cool art and funny gifs in my fandom, then a couple of discussions crept up calling one of my favourite characters a rapist because of a couple of fail!flirting lines he has.

I got triggered badly. I lost an entire day and night to panic attacks and being too depressed to move. I was in a whole shame spiral about maybe it being me and I was an apologist or something.

When the trigger was finally manageable and I applied logic to it; he isn't. He won't do any sexual stuff without enthusiastic consent, and double-checks consent every time you have a convo with him. He and another NPC may hook up depending on your game state. Ill-informed people on Tumblr believe that's rape because the other NPC was drunk. Except there's no indication whatsoever in canon dialogue that the NPC was drunk. By all canon accounts it was an enjoyable, happy, sober time for both.

So yeah, people seem to care more about stamping PROBLEMATIC on a character's head than whichever real person they might be affecting with their awful bullshit.

Yeah, and even so, someone's taste in characters doesn't necessarily say anything about their morals as a person. I like PLENTY of characters whose behavior I totally disapprove of! If I only wrote characters whose behavior I endorsed, my writing would be scant indeed.

Again, it wouldn't be so bad if you could just filter shit easier, but it's tumblr, so it's like being unable to turn the volume down.

i know what you're referring to and god, that entire discussion was bullshit from start to finish, and so was their "evidence". (which sort of makes sense when taken out of context - which is how it was presented - but only if you have no idea what's actually going on. if you know what's really going on, it becomes apparent that it's just grade-a bullshit.)

Too right, fellow anon. I care deeply about actual social justice issues (sexism, racism, homophobia, transphobia, etc.) so I'm hesitant to complain about social justice warriors. But when people do stuff like this and stuff mentioned above with no trigger warnings, it becomes a caricature of itself. You can campaign for equal rights without shitting all over other people who don't have as much social justice cred as you. And without making fandoms, which are meant to be fun, a hostile place for people to be.
