Very much this.

Fandom itself has become something different for newer and younger fans. To us it might seem lazy and disposable and all about instant gratification, but that's also the general media culture they're operating in. You can't blame platforms for shifting to cater to that.

Well, I can blame the platform, yeah.

LJ was better, and Dreamwidth is better, than Tumblr is, except that Tumblr is also an image host.

Tumblr wins by image-hosting, really.
