It's not about trauma it's just about an enjoyable experience. And yes, what makes fanfiction enjoyable for me is different than what makes literature enjoyable, so I care about different things.

the I think I find people defending their fandom by comparing themselves to Nabokov or Shakespeare or whatever more ridiculous than anything else

(Anonymous) 2015-01-06 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
But why do other people owe you an enjoyable experience? I've started to read lots of fics and then stopped because I wasn't enjoying them. I didn't contact the author to ask for changes in plot or characterization, I just went away and read something else.

Nobody owes me anything obviously. And I am not going to throw a tantrum about it either way. But we have evolved a system and an etiquette of tagging and cataloging fic for the convenience of the reader, and warning for char death is part of that to me. So given that etiquette I don't think it's ridiculous to ask for character warnings as part of the system we've built for allowing people to find and choose fics to read. And if your argument against it is that it's betrayal of your artistic integrity I think that is ridiculous.

I didn't make any arguments for not tagging, so I'm afraid you're going to have to battle your straw man alone.

I don't think they're really making a strawman when the topic is "warning for character death: yay or nay?"

I was specifically addressing the "betrayal of artistic integrity" aspect of the comment. Since I didn't make any pro arguments for not tagging because of Artistic Integrity and I reread the secret which also doesn't make any such claims... yeah, I'm going to say that the above anon is bringing up artistic integrity because most people think it's an obnoxious reason not to tag. But since nobody in this thread up till that point had actually claimed it was legit ---> straw man.

All right, I see what you're saying.

NAYRT, but I presume you're okay with 'choose not to warn' as an adequate warning. I don't think I'm Shakespeare or Nabakov, but I don't care to tip my hand that there's a character death - but I do CNTW, which should cover the bases. But now some people still get pissy that there wasn't a character death warning along with CNTW.

i'm pretty sure writers want people to enjoy their work. i mean, are you writing so that people WON'T want to read it? cause...uh. well. i guess it could happen, but that's fucking beyond me.

some people don't mind character death. a lot of people do. some people will put up with it. some won't. it's just a matter of letting people know, hey, you WILL enjoy my work, or you might not, so let's not trick you into reading it, yeah?

it's really just common sense. in the published world, there are ALWAYS reviews that will at least vaguely refer to the kind of content you will encounter. reviews on fanfic (like on ao3) ARE really helpful if they exist. so i suggest to anyone who likes to read fanfic, check out the reviews first, because if a character dies, someone will mention it there. but still, tag your stuff, because for a while there won't be any reviews for people to look at (or if you don't post on a site that allows for reviews). that way more people will read your work, and less people will come away from it wanting to flame the hell out of you.
