Games - what have you been playing?

[personal profile] diet_poison 2015-01-06 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
What it says on the tin!

For me - lately I started Civilization V and I am addicted. It's like a game was tailor-made to be the perfect strategy game for me.

I also started Advance Wars: Dual Strike - it's the only AW game I haven't played. I was talking to [personal profile] cloud_riven about this a few weeks ago and realized I really ought to just play it. I really like it even though it's different from Days of Ruin; it's much more like AW1 but a bit more complex. I like all three of them quite a lot though. On the flash side of things, I've been playing the hell out of Galaxy Harvest. I've been thinking of picking up Animal Crossing: New Leaf again but I don't know where my copy went. I mean it's in my room somewhere, but my room is a mess and I'm in the process of moving, so I will find it soon but I'm not gonna go out of my way right now to dig it out.

I'm currently between games since I wrapped up Prototype 2, and I don't know what's next. Probably Halo 2.

I'm still doing a couple Pokemon challenges. I'm almost done with a variation on the Nuzlocke challenge where you have to wonder trade everything you catch and you're stuck with whatever you get. And I've got a couple ATLA challenges going (where you pick a nation and you can only use pokemon with types assigned to that nation), one as Water Tribe and one as Fire Nation. I've been having fun naming all my pokemon after Avatar characters. You don't want to know how long I spent trying to get a male hoppip because the flying/grass type seemed like the best I was going to get for who I should name Aang but all I kept finding were female ones.

Wonderlocke! I've been wanting to try one of those.

I tried a Nuzlocke on Pokemon Y and failed both times. If I do another it'll probably be on another game.

Obligatory 'I'm still playing Dragon Age' comment that everyone is tired of hearing. (On my Dorian romance, since it seems like Solas' final quest is broken.)

Honestly, all y'all are really making me want to play Inquisition. Everything just seems amazing and filled with meta-potential (I just made up that phrase, whaaaat).

Re: Games - what have you been playing?

[personal profile] elaminator 2015-01-06 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
Well, not everything about it is amazing (I have plenty of issues with it), but despite that I'm still enjoying it and can't shut up about it so that means something. There are def some plot points that are meta worthy and you'll probably love those, but hopefully the game will be patched by the time you get around to it!

I know it has to be hard hearing about it but not playing it... I hope you haven't been spoiled too bad.

maaan, I need to play Dragon Age. I started the first one and got a couple hours in, but then Skyrim happened and I ended up directing my "I feel like playing medieval fantasy" energy to that. Since I tend a bit more towards sci-fi than medieval, idk when the next time I'll feel like playing one will come up. I'm also still in the middle of Skyrim but took a break - I want to go back and finish the plot soon, just to say I did (I was doing sidequests...all the sidequests...)

Re: Games - what have you been playing?

[personal profile] elaminator 2015-01-06 03:43 am (UTC)(link)
I'm still on Skyrim, too. Can't remember the last time I played it, but I had barely touched the story. Think I had something like 140 - 180 hours of side quests and aimless wandering, lmao. That game is dangerous.

I love medieval fantasy so Dragon Age is kind of my baby, but I love Sci-fi too so I get it. I just have a stupid love for BioWare games in general though, so I'll give most everything they do a shot.

Origins is one of my very favorite BioWare games (And RPG's in general), but being a Mass Effect fan you will know that opinions vary significantly on these games so I can't say if you'll enjoy it or not. If you ever get around to finishing it I hope you do!

I absolutely love the Civilization series. I'll admit I haven't played V, but I've spent an ungodly amount of time on IV. "Addictive" is a good descriptor for it.

I'm always behind when it comes to games, because...I'm really cheap. There are times when I'll buy a game upon release (the last time, for me, was Skyrim), but otherwise, it's gonna be months or even years before I lay my money down. Right now, I'm finally getting around to Mass Effect 2 (I'm committed to getting up to speed now that Mass Effect 4 is incoming) and The Last of Us.

As far as The Last of Us goes, I just got to the capitol building earlier tonight, and...oh gods. I just sat there and cried for what was probably an unreasonable amount of time. It's going to kill me, that game. I just know it.

[personal profile] elaminator 2015-01-06 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, wow, the Capital Building is nothing. (Okay, yes, it was, this game is just ridiculously depressing. And oddly enough I love that about it.)

The thing about The Last of Us is that it is cliche central, but imo it does everything so well that it doesn't even matter. I loved the storytelling in this game. And some of the transitions were absolutely brilliant. I hope you enjoy it!

Re: Games - what have you been playing?

[personal profile] a_potato 2015-01-06 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, yeah, you're right. There are cliches and tropes, and they're all over the place, and it's not a story that I haven't heard before. But so far it's been executed so well. The writing and the acting are really on point. My impression currently is that this is a game that makes the case for the fact that lack of "originality" doesn't mean "bad." All of our stories are old; whether or not we connect to them depends on the telling.

Also, I have to admit...now I'm kinda scared, haha. I went into this expecting a lot of emotional upheaval, but reading that the capitol building is nothing is making me all like "...oh crap." I guess I'm in for it. :)

I've never played TLoU but I've heard good things about it.

I'd never even heard of the Civ series until V came out, and I got it on the winter sale. One of the best purchases I've made...soo good. <3

I hear ya about new games. I don't think I've ever bought a new release outside of Nintendo. There are only a few things I would buy immediately now besides Pokemon games, one being ME4 when it does happen, and another being if Bethesda ever did a sci-fi RPG. I wouldn't feel pressured to finish the trilogy on account of 4 because it's not going to be a direct sequel (thank gog). But I'm still tempted to push you to finish it anyway because GHHH MASS EFFECT. (If you want to gush or rant or discuss anything in ME2 I am all ears. Seriously I love this series)

OMG I can't believe you hadn't heard about Civilization before! It is so amazing. But...gosh, well, you know that now so what am I even on about? >__<

I'd heard that about ME4. There's no Shepard, for one, so that's...well, it's a thing. But I really love the series so far, and I'm sad that I didn't pick it up until recently. Full disclosure: I didn't even play the first one until a couple of months ago. I am so filled with geek shame, you do not even know.

My impression so far is that it is absolutely fantastic SF. Intricate worldbuilding, halfway-plausible science, near-Lovecraftian cosmology... It's got it all, and it's got the added bonus of being playable. I feel sometimes as if SF/F was meant to be experienced and internalized through gaming, and it seems like Bioware shares my feelings, lol.

I've been playing This War of Mine. It's a survival game where you play as a group of civilians trying to survive in a city during a civil war. I've made it to day 17, and we're low on food, water, medicine, and building materials. On the upside, I've almost managed to get the vegetable garden started! But it's getting colder, so I need to build a heater soon so people won't get sick. And we keep getting raided at night. And my main scavenger is wounded (b/c of the raids).

It's a really compelling game and I definitely recommend it.

Right now I'm playing Mass Effect since I got the trilogy collection for Christmas. Still on the first one though, since I managed to screw up my build so badly I couldn't even progress on casual (I'm excruciatingly bad at most shooter games) and had to restart. I could pretty much go to the endgame right now if I wanted to though, but I still have side missions that aren't done yet and I don't like leaving those undone.

I've got Borderlands The Pre-Sequel sitting around too, but after playing it for a couple hours, I took it out of the Xbox and haven't even looked at it again, so I'm gonna have my dad run me to Gamestop to get my money back, or a copy of Diablo III: Reaper of Souls since my brother doesn't like me borrowing his.

There's also Pokemon Art Academy and Pokemon Omega Ruby, which have sadly been neglected for the other things I got for Christmas. Whoops.

Yeah, the side missions in Mass Effect are super fun and definitely worth doing; you're always learning more about the universe.

I did beat Omega Ruby but haven't finished the post-game yet (there's a whole big thing called the Delta Episode) and I haven't played Art Academy at all; in fact I'm trying to remember if/where I heard about that - I'll have to look it up.

I didn't get any games for Christmas, except one from my sister. My folks have decided I'm too old for toys. (Ok, my mom decided that, but my dad kinda went along with it. He did buy me a Steam gift card though, unbeknownst to her.)

Depressingly, just more seafood, even though I have both Alien: Isolation and Far Cry 4 sitting in my queue. I did finally finish The Whistleblower DLC for Outlast though.

Lots of sudoku, some tetris. Bubble shooter's always a favorite, esp when watching stuff online.

Do you play Sudoku and Tetris online? I've always enjoyed both of those but haven't really played them online (I used to play Tetris on the GBC and tend to just do sudokus in the newspaper and such)
