What line was cut?

I assume, "The cheetahs are hard up, but I always say, cheetahs never prosper."

In newer releases, they added a new song, "Morning Report", during the scene where Mufasa gives Simba a pouncing lesson and they test it out on Zazu. In the original version, Zazu says "The cheetahs are hard up, but you know what I always say, cheetahs never prosper."

But don't take my word for it:

Given he laughed, though, I would assume he was making a pun and was aware of it. Given that Morning Report is entirely a giant punfest. Zazu likes puns.

The new releases put the Morning Report song in place of Zazu's original spoken list of puns.

The sequel does have a group of outcast lions...would have been interesting to see cheetas working with them. I mean, these animals are talking and singing so who cares right.

Agreed. I always thought a third "Lion King" movie should have cheetahs as part of the plot.

Though I think cheetahs may actually show up in the sequel: I think I've seen screencaps. It was probably during the "Not one of us" scene.

I always figured it was because cheetahs are loners like leopards...Speaking of which I know Zazu said "leopards never change their spots" thing with the cheetah joke, but did we ever actually see any leopards in any of the LK movies?

OP

I don't think so, actually. Good point.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-07 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
One of my current favorite animals is the hyena, so I wish we could have a movie where they get to be something other than henchmen.

I'd say find Tori Ringo Helfer's novel, The Gentle Jungle, but I think there's only one chapter on the Hyenas. I know there are some great photos of her playing with them in one of my copies of the novel (there were two or three versions printed, one for "children" to read which took out all sexual references, and the original version, and one by Reader's Digest?

This is one of those movies that if I at all think beyond the surface, it becomes really sort of horrifying. I try not to do that, because yeah it's a cartoon, but it's almost to the point where it's hard for me to not see it when watching the film.

Cheetahs were my second-favorite animal when I was a kid (my number one favorite? Horses. Always horses.), but I wasn't ever bothered by the fact that their only mention in the movie was in that pun Zazu made. No, what bothered me was that they were enemies in that one level of The Lion King game. At least the enemy hyenas made sense in context! Why are we suddenly fighting cheetahs? It seems like they should have made those fucking monkeys from the second level the enemies instead, if only so we could get revenge on them for tossing us into the water so goddamn many times.

OP

(Anonymous) 2015-01-07 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think I played that (though I did have a Gameboy Lion King game, and there may have been big cats attacking you there; I probably tried my hardest to pretend they were leopards or something), but that would have pissed me off too.

On a related note, there was an episode of that "Timon and Pumbaa" TV show which featured Cheetahs as sort of schemers against the hyenas, and they then proceeded to get the short end of the stick. That didn't sit particularly well with me, either, and probably contributed to my "The entire Lion King universe hates cheetahs" theory.

Monkey are killable enemies as well though, in the first stage after Simba grows up.

A cheetah secret?!

I LOVE CHEETAHS, THEY ARE MY FAVORITE ANIMAL

I have nothing to add, sorry

OP

(Anonymous) 2015-01-07 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
They're my favorites, too. You have great taste.

Actually, "Pet a cheetah" is now number one on my "Things to Do Before I Die" list. I need to get my butt over to Australia/New Zealand, apparently.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-07 04:22 am (UTC)(link)
You were very observant, OP. I didn't notice shit.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-07 10:14 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I'm pretty sure the 'girl' in Simba/Nala's second child's "Lion King Avengers" group is a cheetah.

I hadn't heard of this either! I'll have to look into it more, but this could be pretty cool. Thanks for mentioning it!

The very first scene in that movie has elephants kissing a lion's ass. IRL, elephants can kill a lion with one good swat so lions stay out of the elephant's way. I couldn't take that movie seriously. (Also, male lions were doing everything, IRL female lions do all the hunting and all male lions do is sleep, eat and screw, but you can't have that in a Disney kiddie movie.)
