Any Android Apps You'd Recommend?

[personal profile] nyxelestia 2015-01-07 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
So I've finally caved into my family and upgraded to a smartphone (I must be the only kid whose parents had to harangue her into getting a new smartphone instead of the other way around). It's an Android phone (because I've been using an iPod touch up until now and fuck Apple, seriously).

What are some Android apps you guys like, or might recommend?

I don't play games - and I really don't want to start - but I never really used my iPod for much outside listening to music, reading books, and browsing the Internet while I was away from my computer. I've gotten some apps here and there over the years (mostly educational ones, especially for language learning), but that's about it.

I figure if I finally have to get a smartphone *already misses dumbphone* then I might as well go all the way and see what else I can use it for (i.e. productivity apps, work-out apps, etc.)

What do you guys use?

If you have a Dropbox account, there's an Android app to access your stuff. Actually, a heck of a lot of programs have mobile apps. Password managers, Steam (although the app's not that great), Anki flashcards, websites like MyFitnessPal/SparkPeople/etc.

Sworkit, if you exercise. I can't remember if you do or not. It generates random exercises for a set amount of time. Really nice, if you're into that sort of thing.

FBreader for ebooks. Hands-down, best one I've used.

Mobile apps for your banking or favorite stores, if you like.

Swiftkey, if you don't like the default keyboard.

I use Dolphin Browser for internet, but there are probably other good options as well.

TMI (?), P Tracker for period tracking. It has a nice widget to countdown on your homepage, but it's not obvious.

Duolingo, for language learning. It's a really nice app.

I recommend Dolphin too. It's much faster than Firefox. Opera isn't bad though.

High-five! I literally just upgraded to a smartphone, too!

If you use Chrome you can get that on your phone too along with a thingy that let's you send web pages from your computer and to your phone. Also if you use Google Docs you can get that on your phone too.

I use Memerise for language, so that is pretty neat if you haven't tried it.

Other than that the BBC news app is quite practical and that is all I can think off that I have on my phone that isn't social media and such.

I love Memrise! I have it on my phone and it's great when I'm waiting around for something to just study/keep myself occupied.

Re: work-out apps, there's Decked, 100 Pushups, C25K, and Zombies, Run!

And I don't know if you're interested in news at all, but Pulse is pretty fantastic.

I am so old. I probably use 15 percent of the functionality of my smartphone, and I have never dled an app.

However, one that came on the phone that I find really useful is the Notes one. I'm sure your phone probably already has one, but if not, you can find a free one, I'm sure. I dled a free one to my Kindle so I could take notes while in the bathtub.

I'm right there with ya, on the dumbphone. Siiigh. I had to upgrade to a smart phone 'cause it was the cheapest and smallest option available, that wasn't multi-touch (that's the one thing I just couldn't do again...).

I have a few decent apps for music stuff: -- a keyboard with multiple functions, metronome, tuner -- but that's all rather specific. I really like my e-reader, which is just the google play one it came with. And GeoCaching. I really like GCing.

I've gone through numerous sudoku apps, too, since they all retain your answers after you've filled in the puzzle. I did just find one that lets you clear the puzzle once you've finished it, though, and looks to have about 500 puzzles, so that's kept me entertained for the last month, or so.

Mostly it comes down to what you like to do. I don't mind little games in my spare time (waiting for the bus, on the bus when there are no seats and it's hard to hold a book). You might also look into things that could help you with work or school, or something.

Also, depending what you wind up keeping on it, look into something like Phone Vault, or Safe Phone. They're programs that lock docs and pics behind passwords, just in case your phone walks away. (paranoia is merely a heightened sense of awareness, ok? >>)

I rather like ColorNote (which I use for dictating my grocery list in my phone). I also have an 8 Ball app for kicks and giggles that I adore.

I use Pink Pad to track my period. It's a bit "meh..." so far, but then I haven't given it any information other than what days I bleed and how much, so...

Other than that I simply can't function without the Spotify app.
