Re: Fandom/fic trends that annoy you

One character in a pairing always (or overwhelming) being the top during sex. I LIKE A LITTLE VARIETY!

Saying we have to protect ___________ at all costs. Generally a woobie or female character.

I write 100% of my pairings as switch/verse/whatever you want to call it. Otherwise it's beyond boring to me.

Switching is the best (especially in the same fic). But I am fine as long as there is some variety.

I hate it when a fandom seems to collectively decide that one character will always top and another will always bottom

It is so annoying. I guess it comes from anime/manga?

Oh, the "protect at all costs" crowd is ANNOYING. Especially because if you LIKE said character it leads to the fandom becoming BORING AS FUCK because we can't ever criticize the character (and their portrayal) or their negative characteristics.

It just turns the fandom into an endless, superficial circle jerk of "_____ is a QUEEN!" or "PERFECT _______."

As someone who loves dissecting fiction, it basically removes any impetus I have to participate in fandom.

It can make me hate that character/show. Especially if it something new so EVERYONE is reblogging stuff about it.

I agree. Also, dom/sub always translating to top/bottom. There are some characters that I only like reading as the more dominant or more submissive partner in that sort of relationship. However, I'd really like to see a lot more of bottom!doms and top!subs.

I have read very few of those. But I enjoy them because they usually have less humiliation (the one thing that makes me not enjoy BDSM fic [but it is in so much of the fic :C]).

I've actually not seen a whole lot of humiliation. Maybe its the pairings I frequent? I tend to avoid it if it is warned for. Not my kink at all.

Well, if you got any good recs, I'd love them.

Humiliation just...squicks me the fuck out. I get second hand embarrassment from movies/tv shows when people are humiliated on screen.

I so, so agree with you about this-- both in fic and in media.

Me too. There is no reason to be mean. I just like it when one of the characters is bossy. And there is kinky stuff. But that doesn't mean they have to be insulting and humiliating to the other person.

Honestly, it has been a while since I've read any kinky fics. I've mostly been reading Tolkien fics, and I avoid kinky fics there because most of them are bad.

I don't like that either. Not even talking about in the context of sexual relationships - just, when we're supposed to have a laugh at someone being really embarrassed by something, it's always bothered me.

Man, do I hear you on that.

Especially since gee, what a coincidence, often it's the "more manly" guy being the top. *rolls eyes* Please, spare me.

Seriously. And often the exact same character will change from always top to always bottom depending on who they are paired with.

The top/bottom thing is weird, like most of the time I don't have a preference either way but if it's always the same character topping I will find that boring.

Re: Fandom/fic trends that annoy you

(Anonymous) 2015-01-08 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
I recently had a... bad review? Flame? Wall of textual seething hatred cursing my very existence? just because there was one switched sex scene in a fic that was already labeled as such. Didn't matter that the most pivotal sex scene in the entire fic was to their preference; one incredibly tame non-penetrative scene featuring the other top/bottom variation was enough to make this person angry to the point where I was genuinely worried about them.

I will never understand how/why people take top/bottom preferences that extremely.

I don't like that thing with the always topping, either. It's okay for people to switch it up! I think it would be safe to say that most people do IRL.

But if there's one thing it seems fandom is really into it's rigid sexual roles.

See, I like variety too, but it just depends on the pairing for me. Certain pairings I am all about the switching, but others I prefer certain top/bottom roles. It just depends on the dynamics of the pair.
