This one isn't really that big of a deal, but it kind of bugs me that a lot of people call themselves "trash" when they're fans of something now (ex: "homestuck trash" "stucky trash" etc). Like...why?

I can't stand that. Or calling the character trash. I see a lot of "hydra trash party".

I haven't seen that... I'd probably assume they were reacting to someone else calling them that.

This, and calling their favorite characters trash and yelling about how much they "hate" them. I still can't tell if they mean it like "I hate you because you're perfect and it's so upsetting that you're not real" or "I love you as a character but I think you're awful and hate you as a person" or if they're just being all-around ironic.

Sibling incest. I know it's often the best-developed relationship the characters involved have, but it'd be nice if it wasn't the vast majority of the fic written about sibling pairs.

the trend for teenagers to call celebrities they're fans of 'mom' or 'dad'. it really creeps me out.

One character in a pairing always (or overwhelming) being the top during sex. I LIKE A LITTLE VARIETY!

Saying we have to protect ___________ at all costs. Generally a woobie or female character.

People complaining that a character topping or bottoming all the time is "unrealistic"

Representation for representation's sake -- especially to the point where including representation results in a torturous twisting of canon to make it work.

Most characters being gay/bi in fics, or projecting the author's opinions/characteristics on characters. It's just crappy writing.

That it's okay to bash white female characters if you break up a canon couple for an interracial pair.

But god help you if you do this for a slash ship because then it's ~misogyny~ just to ship a dude with another dude, no matter how well you treat/characterize the female character.

Characters that are portrayed as slightly intelligent in canon suddenly being frickin' geniuses in fanon. No having a degree in a science from twenty years ago does not mean you'd be able to solve on of the Millenium Problems.

Not really a recent trend, but I hate it when there's a canon that takes place in an interesting or unusual universe (things like Hunger Games or Attack on Titan, just off the top of my head) and the fandom is filled with really boring and overly fluffy high school, bakery, or coffee shop AUs. Why? I understand why people would occasionally want fluff for bleak fandoms, but there's just so much of it and most of it is so generic that the character's names could be pretty much interchangable

Character A likes women. Character A also happens to be a man who has chemistry with another man, Character B.

Yet in fic, Character A is always, almost without exception, suddenly gay and has no sexual interest in women at all.

Like... really? It is possible to like both you know.

High school/boarding school/Hogwarts AUs where canonically adult characters are re-written as teenagers.

Personality being used to justify who tops or bottoms during sex. Ex: Character A being a sweet, bouncy or warm type and Character B being cold or gruff and distant type. Obviusly Character B tops.

This goes for height too. Shorter character being the bottom.

I stop caring about smut for any of my ships about a few weeks into them if the trend is really strong with them. I just settle for one-shots or read works by authors who I know tend to lean toward the more varied side.

Also, taking a character who in canon tends to be polite and reserved and turning them into a rude punk in modern AUs. Think it's just me but this is unfailingly common for some reason.

Demanding that ships become canon.

Declaring that a type of fic you don't like shouldn't be considered fanfic/allowed on archives. (yes I'm remembering that stupid "shipfic should be kept on personal blogs" secret")

Complaining about something in fanfic when you were already warned it would have it (certain ships, slash, etc)

Generally acting like you're entitled to order people to stop writing some fic or pairing or AU because you dislike it.
