Well if Character A is in a relationship with Character B…no duh, he's not going to show interest in women. In most romances, when the couple is together, the narrative doesn't focus on them checking out OTHER people.

Sorry, should have been clearer. I mean Character A canonically likes women. As in, he has sexual relationships with women.

In fic, even if he hooks up with B, that doesn't magically erase that part of his sexuality. The lack of acknowledgement of that frustrates me.

I guess I'm not really sure how you want it acknowledged? If he hooks up with B, then he's in love with B and I imagine the readership wants to see cute moments of A/B together or A thinking about how hot B is. I doubt they want to read A's thoughts about how hot a nearby woman is any more than people watching The Notebook want to hear the dude talking about how attractive some OTHER random woman is rather than Rachel McAdams' character.

Well], I would have thought it would be rather obvious that my issue here is that, when authors actually address this point, Character A is labelled as gay with no interest in women. And the reason this is an issue for me is because, as far as I'm concerned, Character A can be interested in both women and men without it diminishing the validity of his love for Character B.

I've actually rarely seen authors flat out say Character A is "such and such sexuality" in fic though. Usually they'll just write Character A as being in love with B, in my experience and ignore his past interest in women because they're writing him as interested in B for the fic.

Sure, A can be interested in both men and women, but the people who go there to read A/B don't really care about A's interest in random female OC #74.

You're really reaching to find fault with this. See dietpoisons comment below it sums it up better than I could and anyway I simply can't be bothered with you anymore.

But sometimes people will then say "character A is gay" instead of "character A is bisexual"

And in some cases people in relationships do check out other people, or talk about their tastes, or some such.

Definitely. My hubby's bi, and I actually enjoy him finding women attractive. If he suddenly stopped, I'd be deeply concerned for his well-being! (Also, I rarely find people attractive, but I often enjoy their body in an artistic 'I MUST DRAW YOUR KNEES' way.)

So we can totally bond over our appreciation for women, even if it's in totally different ways.

I'm a straight gal, and honestly, if I ended up dating or marrying a bi guy, I think I'd have a lot of fun scoping out dudes with him. Even though I don't usually feel super attracted to people I don't know, I still have "ah, he's cute!" moments. :P
