People complaining that a character topping or bottoming all the time is "unrealistic"

"I don't like it" - fine
"unrealistic" - lol, no, and I bet you're a straight girl.

SA

posted this before I saw kaijinscendre, I didn't mean to sound like I'm talking about them. I'm not, they have a personal pref and that's cool. Saying guys that ID as tops or bottoms is "unrealistic" is just naive tho

Hey, I know that some people prefer exclusively topping/bottoming (or abstain from penetrative sex altogether). So I can get why that would be annoying to hear.

It's not unrealistic, but it's also not unrealistic to write any given character as verse. So the opposite is also true.

How will we ever deal with the fact that people have different preferences regarding how they like to have sex? I don't even know.

Yeah except I didn't say switches are unrealistic. Switches exist. Tops and bottoms exist too. Saying any of them are unrealistic is dumb, is what I'm saying. If you want more bottom!Bob or top!Bill they should say what they mean and say they think it's hot, not do the "it's unrealistic, everyone switches"

Oh I get what you meant now. And yeah, no, not everyone switches. If they did I would be a lot less bored by some partners I've had.

Yeah, every time someone trots out the "unrealistic" argument or insists characters would never top or bottom all the time I cringe. People like that exist, reality is so much more versatile than they think, pun not intended

I exclusively prefer one or the other depending on who it's with buuut I'd never call myself "versatile" because in practice I'm not. GL finding someone writing a character like that in fanfic though, right? You mean characters can have more than one relationship in a lifetime? With different dynamics? gasp

If it makes you feel better, the novel I and my partner are in the process of writing has a main character who exclusively tops with his gay lover but has in the past only been a bottom with another man.

So... yeah man, I understand you. That's not how it works for me most of the time, but I am totally on board with the different relationship dynamics approach.

That's why it's a novel and not a fanfic, right lol

Good luck with it though :)

Well, I do the same in my fic universes when writing them, but tbh I don't really get that much opportunity to do those. Too consumed with bigger projects.

But thanks. :)

I honestly don't know where the "unrealistic" thing came from. I genuinely know guys in real life who heavily, heavily skew towards the one or other.

I even have a friend who sighed in relief that his current bf is an actual bottom, and not versatile.

(And before you ask, no I do not ask these questions in passing, for some reason people end of offering info about their sex lives to me all the bloody time)

I'm with this too. People have preferences! Sometimes, people really prefer one or the other (or neither or both).

But I guess just arguing "who tops" is enough for some folks.
