Looking at his list of works (the only on I recognize being Astroboy), I'd say Miyzaki is the Japanese Walt Disney. It wasn't just his art style that made Walt Disney famous. It was his creativity and name brand. Miyazaki has all three of these things (especially in the west).

You could have called him that back fifteen or twenty years ago but not any more. Miyzaki bangs the "traditional animation only" drum too much to be like Disney who was always looking for new techniques to use in animation. Disney would have not liked Miyzaki for the same way you might like someone who keeps on going, "Well, back in the old days, things were better" and refuses to embrace new technology and try new things.

To be fair, the anime industry has evolved differently from the Western animation industry (which has diversified.) His critique about modern anime and its creators is spot on -- 20 years ago, even 10 years ago, I might've been able to tell the difference from one anime to the other but it's all the same goddamn moeblobs these days.

What he describes about anime is actually mirrored in western superhero comics -- the fans are running the show now and that's why superhero comics have gotten a bit stagnant.

I hear that. I mean, superheroes, I love you but... there's a reason I stopped reading the Big Two a while back.

I'm still reading DC and I don't intend to change that because I love the characters too much, but I do tend to value their more off-beat stuff over their mainstream titles (unless it's a really good run like Brian Azzarello's Wonder Woman stint or Scott Snyder's Batman.)
