I'm tired of people holding up Miyazaki as the Japanese Walt Disney or the only worthwhile anime director. Tezaku arguably had a bigger influence and I'd argue that Mizyazaki isn't even the most skilled director at Ghilbi.

Looking at his list of works (the only on I recognize being Astroboy), I'd say Miyzaki is the Japanese Walt Disney. It wasn't just his art style that made Walt Disney famous. It was his creativity and name brand. Miyazaki has all three of these things (especially in the west).

You could have called him that back fifteen or twenty years ago but not any more. Miyzaki bangs the "traditional animation only" drum too much to be like Disney who was always looking for new techniques to use in animation. Disney would have not liked Miyzaki for the same way you might like someone who keeps on going, "Well, back in the old days, things were better" and refuses to embrace new technology and try new things.

To be fair, the anime industry has evolved differently from the Western animation industry (which has diversified.) His critique about modern anime and its creators is spot on -- 20 years ago, even 10 years ago, I might've been able to tell the difference from one anime to the other but it's all the same goddamn moeblobs these days.

What he describes about anime is actually mirrored in western superhero comics -- the fans are running the show now and that's why superhero comics have gotten a bit stagnant.

I hear that. I mean, superheroes, I love you but... there's a reason I stopped reading the Big Two a while back.

I'm still reading DC and I don't intend to change that because I love the characters too much, but I do tend to value their more off-beat stuff over their mainstream titles (unless it's a really good run like Brian Azzarello's Wonder Woman stint or Scott Snyder's Batman.)

But... Walt Disney isn't the only worthwhile animated movie director in the U.S., nor is he the most skilled, either. He's just the most famous, so maybe the comparison isn't really that off the mark?

I'd still say that reducing anyone foreign to the most famous American person who did something similar is a disservice.

Like think about calling David Cameron the English Barack Obama.

That's a terrible comparison. It's much more like calling Pope Francis the Catholic Barack Obama.

Uh, are you the OP of this thread? Because if so, this is a completely different argument than the original comment. I don't disagree with it, but it's like interrupting a discussion about the apple-growing industry with "I DUN CARE I STILL THINK ORANGES ARE BETTER FOR BEING HIGHER IN VITAMIN C".

I mean... that's cool? But, uh... where did you come from?

Tezuka had an enormous influence. He's a seminal figure in Japanese cartooning.

Miyazaki was a master of the animation form.

Those are two different things.

Ooh, ooh, did someone say Tezuka? :D?

Tezuka was in my opinion the master of MANGA. He of course had a huge influence on the animation industry as well, but that wasn't his core focus. I've seen some of his anime short films and they were... strange. And at least one of them was actually pretty disturbing.

Tezuka influenced manga, which influenced anime by proxy, but I wouldn't call him the Walt Disney equivalent. He's kind of in a class of his own, because honestly, US comics doesn't have anything even SLIGHTLY resembling him. The closest you could get is Eisner or Kirby, and even they are put to shame by Tezuka's MASSIVE output.

Seriously, I don't know when that men SLEPT.

I'm tired of people figuring because I like animation and Disney that I must cream myself over Miyazaki...
