My main fandom is currently kerfluffling all over the place because of this, because it is for a game and they think that getting to create a character to play within the world means that every character in the world is theirs to headcanon into whatever they want them to be. Which, sure, in your game, but a lot of them want to have their headcanons treated as canon in discussions about the material (some even expect the developers themselves to respect their headcanons).

To be fair, the vast majority of the fandom thinks the latter group is a bunch of crazy people. They're just extremely loud crazy people.
