I WANT to like these films, but…I just can't.

In the Battle of the Five Armies, what killed me was that the dwarves and Bilbo essentially set the dragon free on the town. The town was destroyed as a result of them waking Smaug. It's not all their fault, obviously, but I do think they bear part of the blame.

And when the townsfolk come and ask for help…they do nothing. None of the dwarves challenges Thorin. And even when they go out to fight, they only do so to help their family (other dwarves). They never seem to care that they left these people homeless and the movie still treats them like noble heroes.

How can you like them? I just don't get it...

The only one who doesn't want to help is Thorin. And the whole point is that he's deep in gold sickness at that point. And then he gets better. There is nothing to suggest that anyone else wouldn't have been willing to help. But Thorin is king, so what he says goes. They don't challenge him because he is their king. Middle Earth is a fantasy-quasi medieval world where royalty is a thing.

Tolkien's characters are flawed. The movie clearly doesn't approve of Thorin not helping the Laketown people.

I think the worst case of gold sickness was whoever greenlighted a screenplay that missed the point in every possible way. Perhaps the producers were also drowning in that pool of cheese dip.

It's a movie that had Gandalf and Galadriel making moon eyes at each other. You can't get much wronger than that. Except for the other elf romance that ignores what elves are in Tolkien's cosmology and why those relationships only happen once an age. Or perhaps for burying Martin Freeman's strong performance as the title character under nearly two hours of unnecessary effects shots, complications, and cameos that exist only to make a movie release out of three chapters of the book. Or perhaps changing the moral conflict entirely by making Thorin cursed by a glass football, a swimming pool of cheese dip, and Cumberbatch ADR (an asspull of a revision resolved in the movie, apparently, by spreading the curse all over Middle Earth).

Moon eyes? The trailer certainly made it seemed like they were going that angle, but in the actual movie all I saw was two old friends who cared for each other. Not even a hint of romance.

As for the rest, don't agree at all. I liked it. But I get that a lot of people didn't.
