I think the truth lies somewhere in the middle of the two extremes. No, nobody is obligated to respect anyone else's headcanon. On the other hand, sometimes writers get shit wrong, or make mistakes, or purposefully retcon characters into something OOC, and it's totally fine for anyone to call writers out on that or headcanon it away.
