Re: fandom opinions
In the book (which I have read multiple times since childhood), all the dwarves except Balin come across as pretty much dickwads. Especially Thorin. They're cowardly, ignoble, greedy. I don't care when Thorin dies in the book.
The book made me empathize with him and care about him. It made him and the other dwarves heroic and noble. It made his quest into one to reclaim a homeland and reunite a people. I care when movie Thorin dies, and I care because the dragon sickness took a hero and twisted his values. I don't care when always greedy Thorin continues to be greedy.
Obviously not calling your take or reading wrong! Just my personal pref.

(I also realize I typed book when I meant movie in that second paragraph. Oh the perils of posting while drinking wine. LOL)
Re: fandom opinions
(Anonymous) 2015-01-09 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)I guess I never really saw the dwarves as dickwads, so much as having different priorities that made sense to them culturally, but not to Bilbo. Honestly, Gandalf annoyed me more. It sometimes seemed like he was just getting his kicks by fucking with Bilbo. I haven't read the Hobbit in ages though, so who knows what I'd think about it all now.
Re: fandom opinions
In the trilogy, he's mysterious but makes sense. In The Hobbit, he's an utter cypher and his decision to involve Bilbo is inexplicable. It's a caprice, a whim.

I can see that.
